Thank you Mimi! This is a fantastic book for anyone who has considered starting their own food business but are not sure where to start. The book deals mostly with cooking/baking but the concepts can easily be applied to any production business. Even if your local health department does not allow you to make your goods at home Mimi identifies other options that will allow you to start your business. Everything from making a budget, figuring out the cost of your products, shelf-life, how to name your company/products, and even free recipes are included! Another fantasic feature is the bonus DVD that includes downloadable forms such as a recipe cost calculator, press release template, expense ledgers and much more. Even if you have never considered becoming an entrepreneur this book is so well written and thorough that it might inspire you enough to give it a shot! Again, thanks for writing this food business bible!

I'm happy to report that I filed for my LLC yesterday, and will soon be on my way to baking from my kitchen for our local farmer's market. I couldn't have done this without this book. It helped me realize that starting a business from my home was possible, and the book gave great advice on how to easily make it happen--from the fun stuff like packaging, to the business-related topics like business licenses and accounting. Thank you so much!!!

This book starts from the very beginning. You get tips about different kitchen set-ups and beginning equipment necessities as well as advancing to finding a special product niche and moving up to an actual baking shop. Very good investment for the money. The worksheets also were helpful.

This book is truly inspirational. It clearly guides the home baker step by step in every aspect of starting their own business. Before I read this, I didn't have any idea how to begin the process of starting my own business. I am now a proud business owner, and owe it all to the guidance of this wonderful, informative book. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering starting their own home-based business. Mimi's years of experience and the information she has provided in this book are invaluable, especially the chapter "Making Your Business Legal". Clear guidelines to follow in every chapter, and a book to frequently reference...this is a must have!

I was interested in taking advantage of my state's cottage law and sought a book that would provide information on the entire process from determining which product or products will work best for my baking talents and available time, to managing all the overwhelming "business" aspects of a hopefully burgeoning business. There is an abundance of helpful details in this book. I appreciated the positive and negative examples Ms. Fix provided. I'm a person who likes to hear the mistakes others have made because it helps me make sure I don't make them too. I liked the recipes included in the book and have tailored some of the forms included on the accompanying CD so that they work for me. A well-deserved five star review from this satisfied reader!

Note: This book is for the reader seeking information about how to set up and run a home based food BUSINESS (e.g., business registration, basic accounting). Ms. Fix's other book "Home Baking for Profit" provides tips and techniques for BAKING as a business.

My wife who loves baking retired from job and was looking for something to do to bring in extra cash. I bought her this book and she found it very helpful.
After reading the steps laid out in this very well organized and clearly written book, she is now seriously thinking of starting her own business.

I discovered this book by chance. I'm glad I did! Start & Run a Home-Based Food Business is the perfect guide for bakers looking to take their sweet culinary skills to a commercial-level. I found it easy to read, informative, encouraging, and filled with helpful suggestions. The author, home-baker cum bakery-owner cum corporate food consultant cum blogger cum instructor Mimi Fix uses her extensive first-hand experience to give a well-rounded, real look at what steps to take when baking for business. Touching on everything from start-up capital to the importance of staying abreast of industry news and food trends, to recipe advice and tips, I found the most helpful sections to be calculating costs and pricing products, where to find customers, promotional flyers, formatting recipes, increasing ingredients, state agriculture and market URL links, and UPC code details. The resource disk that's included with the book is the perfect companion. It's well-conceived and includes Mimi's own recipes, which I veganize. Through bakingfix.com, Mimi's website, I learned she blogs regularly and teaches classes in the Hudson Valley, as well as sits on the Hudson Valley Baking Society. Her advice is sage, bona-fide, and more so, important in understanding how to run a home-based and commercial space bakery. As I piece together my baking business I find myself referring back to this book and Mimi's expert ideas again and again. I recommend it highly.

I thought this book was great. It holds a lot of different information and even covers some of the legal issues. Of course one book cannot cover EVERY detail but this book touches on a wide variety of subjects. I actually ordered a second book out of this series! The best thing to do is check into local laws before thinking about starting a home based business of any kind. Food business are not allowed in a lot of places. This book was professional and it gave a lot more detail on forms that you would need. The forms can actually be used and adapted for your needs. It is well written and if you are driven to start a business this is a great set/series to check out!
