Installed this on a 12 hp briggs lawn tractor. The mounting bracket was not as thick as the stock one so the gear mesh wasnt quite right. Had to use two shims to get the correct spacing. This starter has been working great for two months now. For a "factory" starter it would have been about $100, this was a great alternative.

Hi !
I had to put one washer between the starter and engine-body, at one of the two assembling holes.
The reason was to get a proper fitment of the plastic gear on the starter and the flywheel.
(I dont know the calculated lifetime of plastic gear on the starter, but I see it as a risk of abbreviated lifetime)

This starter was identical in dimensions to the original starter, so it was easy to install. No idea as to the longevity. So far it starts the 14.5 HP Briggs engine on my mower just fine. No complaints.

I bought this starter because I did not want to pay the high price for a new Briggs and Stratton one. Bolted right up to my Briggs and Stratton 12HP I/C engine on my 1990 Snapper Rear Engine. Turned the key and it fired right up.

The biggest complaint people have about this product is that the gear is made of plastic. Briggs and Stratton has a replacement for about $7.99. NOT A BIG DEAL. If you have a metal one on your original, just do the swap. The original one on my lawn mower had a plastic one on it. The replacement one that Briggs makes also has a plastic gear. So do not worry about the fact it has a plastic gear since it is replaceable.

The seller was great to deal with, however after returning the first starter they sent a new one without hesitation. the second starter was the same as the first, worked for about five starts and then craps out. Not enough power to turn over a 12hp briggs. Save some time and frustration and buy the oem briggs starter for three times as much.

My original starter was on it's last leg, and was 13 years old. When I got the new starter I counted the teeth on the gear and realized my old one had a different tooth count, and was metal compared to plastic for the new gear. I swapped the gears and the new starter bolted right in. My lawn tractor now starts reliably every time.

As soon as I received this starter (the next day after placing my order), I knew it was gonna do just what I needed it to do. Besides having to tweak the mounting flange like others had to do, it performs flawlessly. This is a good starter for the money.

I love the fact that it's a Briggs product, as I have much respect for the brand. Our tractor started right up on the first try after tmy husband installed the part! This is the exact part I could get at a lawn mower repair shop, but much cheaper!
