Soundtracks are my "thing" ...,

This review is from: Starter for Ten (Audio CD)
Starter for 10 soundtrack is a pleasant diversion into obscure (and not-so-obscure) 80's music.
It's neat to remember back to when I was listening to this music for the first time. It finds a good spot in this movie, especially since the movie is from a British point of view. These weren't the usual songs I used to listen to, so they are not repeated in my CD collection as much as some other songs on other movie soundtracks. Nice compilation, well worth the listen. Enjoy!

A fantastic collection of alternative 80s tunes: a great soundtrack from a wonderful film -- like 80s KROQ!,
This review is from: Starter for Ten (Audio CD)
First, I urge you to watch the film if you have not yet seen it. It is often shown on HBO and Cinemax in the U.S. and it is available on DVD. James McAvoy will become one of the most famous actors of his generation and this film showcases his comedic talents (he is brilliant as both a comedic actor and as a dramatic actor -- see The Last King of Scotland or Atonement or Becoming Jane). And he is barely thirty!
Starter for Ten is a little British gem of a film that features a truly believable and touching love story at its centre. Brian (McAvoy) is torn between two women -- the obviously beautiful but deceptive, posh, and shallow Alice and the philosophical but slightly moody, "difficult" activist Rebecca (who also happens to be Brian's best friend at Bristol University). Read the plot summary of the film for more info. If you are a GenXer like me or if you have any interest in the 80s, especially the marvelous music, you will adore this film. It is the BEST 80s "nostalgia" film that I have seen, by far. The soundtrack is superb: lots of early gems from the best alternative bands such as The Cure, Tears for Fears, The Buzzcocks, etc. The soundtrack made me miss the KROQ of my youth, circa 1985 (remember Richard Blade?), when every song was a masterpiece of alternative music-making. The songs are brilliantly used in the film -- each scene that uses a song is perfect in tone and makes you ache with nostalgia for the 80s and its music. Love the soundtrack and love this film. Both are highly recommended.

James McAvoy sizzles,
This review is from: Starter for Ten (Audio CD)
The film adaptation of the book is lacking in that special "uumph" which makes for a dynamic movie, but James McAvoy does everything in his power to save it. Tom Hanks is one of the producers so it has some merit. If one wants a good romantic comedy, this one has real potential. McAvoy begins his college career with idealized ideas of what the college experience is supposed to include. When he "screws" up big time, he must learn what really counts in this world and what real love says to a person.
