Book Description

March 31, 2009
Starting Over in the U.S. After Getting Your Green Card is the only book on the market that helps readers to start life in America despite the problems they may have had in the past caused by a period of illegal status or other challenges.

Over one million immigrants annually are awarded lawful permanent resident status in the United States, while millions more wait to legalize their status. For most immigrants, the road to a Green Card is long and hard. Some newcomers endure many years existing outside the law; and even those with legal immigration papers sometimes make mistakes that can have long-term consequences. A bad credit history or a criminal record can prevent them from living a normal life, finding a good job, or obtaining citizenship.

The purpose of this guide is to help immigrants through common problems, such as: How to pay back income taxes and Social Security taxes. How to resolve scrambled Social Security earnings or recover employment taxes not paid by the employer. How to correct or establish your credit history. How to get a first job in your profession. What to do in case of identity theft and how to recover from unauthorized financial transactions. How to fix blemishes on your driving record and your vehicle history. How to fight traffic and parking tickets. How not to lose your driver s license. How to check and fix your criminal history.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The American Dream is not something so easily obtained. "Starting Over in the U.S. After Getting Your Green Card" is a guide for immigrants who have legally obtained their green card and now want to carve their niche in the country to claim their own slice of the American dream. With advice on the formalities of being a new citizen, keeping one's privilege to work in this country, and earning a good job in a competitive market. "Starting Over in the U.S." is a solid acquisition for those making the transition themselves or who have friends facing it. --Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars For all foreign-born, January 31, 2009
This review is from: Starting Over in the U.S. After Getting Your Green Card: An Indispensible Guide for Immigrants ; NewAmericanGuides Series (Paperback)
You may say that the book is for former undocumented aliens, but primarily it is meant for those who strive, fail, pick themselves up, and try again. Doesn't it sound like the rest of us? Highly recommended!
