Book Description

January 25, 2007
Glass is to be found everywhere, from delicate wineglasses to ornamental lamps that illuminate and decorate. This book is a valuable starting point for enthusiasts. It tells you where to hunt for bargains and how to add rarities to a growing collection. An important section offers tips on what is available within any price range. It is filled with invaluable advice. How do you spot repairs or re-polishing? How can you avoid the proliferation of fakes while you learn to distinguish fine glass from ordinary? John Sandon's sensible guidance will prevent many costly mistakes. This book tells the whole story of glass, from its discovery in ancient Egypt right through to the fascinating world of the twentieth century and post-war design. The carefully chosen illustrations, all in colour, provide stunning contrasts between fine old Venetian and Art Nouveau masterpieces and quite ordinary decanters and Victorian moulded bottles. Alongside costly rarities is the inexpensive novelty glass anyone can find eas

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting, if you are from Europe, June 19, 2008

This review is from: Starting To Collect Antique Glass (Starting to Collect Series) (Hardcover)
I found this book to be interesting regarding the history of glass and full of great photos, but a bit irrelevant unless you live in Europe or have access to old European glass. If I travel to Europe, I will find the book helpful as a resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to my library on glass., May 2, 2010

This review is from: Starting To Collect Antique Glass (Starting to Collect Series) (Hardcover)
Having enjoyed other John Sandon books, I took a chance on ordering this one. I have books focusing on etched glass so I was looking for enameled, Bohemian, multi-colored, stemware, gilded, and painted pieces. This book has that and more. Some photos show several pieces from the same maker, style, or era. Heavy shiny photographic paper is used. It is not a large book but it has good sized, distinct photos with the details so you can enjoy turning the pages. I had viewed Miller's Collecting Glass and 20th Century Glass from the library. All three cover similar glass but the authors' choice for what to show as examples differs. 20th Century Glass was too limited for me but I liked the book. I ended up buying this book and Miller's Collecting Glass. They gave me a wonderful reference set with many examples from the same maker, style, or era. There are lots of differences between the books so I can not say that one is better than the other. Both describe the various styles and history of glass manufacture. Each author offers tips on buying antique glass and pricing. It would have helped if Amazon's Look Inside feature were available for both so that a person searching for something specific could decide if one book is more appropriate. If you are looking for a glass cross section these two books cover it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superior Antique glass book, October 29, 2005
This review is from: Starting To Collect Antique Glass (Starting to Collect Series) (Hardcover)
This book is divided into well-defined chapters on just about everything you want to know about Antique glass from manufacture to design to availability. There are lost of color pictures that are well described. What it is not is a price catalog. This book is well worth the price even if you have some to the same information already.
