Parent of a son with SPD, author Bonnie Arnwine chose activities that require minimal time, money, and clean-up. Most “ingredients” are already on hand: empty yogurt cups, string, soap, Kool-aid, flour, paper plates, etc. If the kids tire of an activity, an “Extend It!” section shows how to use the same ingredients in new and different ways. Kids have fun while activities exercise the seven sensory “muscles”: the visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, oral, vestibular, and proprioceptive senses. Activities can be enjoyed with others, so children also benefit from interacting socially with their peers, parents, and teachers.

About the Author

Bonnie Arnwine is the mother of an exceptional child, and sensory integration has been an integral part of her son’s successful transition from special education to full inclusion in regular classes. Formerly a preschool teacher, she is now Director of Children’s Ministries for Fair Oaks Church of Concord, CA. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California at Davis and has undertaken graduate work in education. She currently lives in Concord, California with her husband, son, and daughter.

This book is a must for parents that have experienced daily challanges that few discuss. I appreciate the easy directions and the equipment I already have on hand that is called for. My son used to take flour and pour it on everything for a 'snow day'!Little did I realized what he needed. Thank you Bonnie , for your time spent in understanding the sensory needs of so many and equiping me , as a parent to help my son.

I love this book! It is filled with simple, easy activities to engage your child's senses. The directions for each activity are very straight-forward and include helpful hints to save on cleanup and mess. While this is an invaluable resource for a parent or teacher of children with sensory issues, the activities are fun and would appeal to most kids. Another great thing about the book is that it groups together familiar songs and games when appropriate to stimulate a sense, such as movement or touch. Ms. Arwine includes stories and anecdotes about children with sensory issues to illustrate ways the activities can aid such children. Great resource!
