5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Business Resource August 17, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am an author and have owned and operated my own freelance web site development business since 1998, Quist Interactive, and was interviewed for this book. I was very happy with the result. The book is a comprehensive resource for running a freelance web business with information you need but might not have considered before leaping into the freelance world. If you work for another business and are looking into going off on your own, it touches on a number of very important topics you'll inevitably encounter - like office space, rates and billing, accounting needs, taxes, legal, insurance, marketing and promotion, and more. This book has a solid business focus along with advice on building your own portfolio. If you're serious about building your own business and working for yourself, I recommend this book as a solid starting point. Good luck with your new business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for design students August 16, 2011
Format:Paperback
If you're trying to launch your own freelance career, add this book to your collection. It share with you the gritty details that they don't teach you in art school. This book should be required reading in art institutes. There are no cute gimmicks in this book, just practical advice on running your own business.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF THE FREELANCE WEB DESIGN BUSINESS November 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was published at the exact time in my life when I have given very serious thought at starting a freelance web design company. Neil Tortorella delivers the knowhow and tools that are needed to tackle the business end of being a freelancer. In the web design field, which is growing and becoming the main storefront window of many small, midsize and large businesses, it's important to learn the nuts and bolts behind the designing end of things. Neil very clearly communicates his thoughts and advice in his writing- which is very easily read and understandable. He touches on important subjects such as: accounting, insurance, taxes, billing rates, legalities and marketing.

The author also focuses on explaining each step in project management; from the process involved in discovery to content gathering and creation to design and development. He offers tips on software to use in the business end of being a freelancer and directs us to other web based resources.

I loved the book and I'll be using much of the content to launch my business- most likely at the beginning of 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Let the Title Fool You! October 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
A colleague once told me, "If I stay in this business for another twenty years, I will still have something to learn." To paraphrase an old adage, the proof of the pudding is in the reading of Starting Your Career as a Freelance Web Designer.

Neil takes his readers from the "to business or not to business" decision stage and expertly chauffeurs them through every aspect of freelance business.

As a moderator at a large web-tech forum, I frequently see questions posed by talented people who lack training in business. This book is not only jam-packed with insights and how-tos; it also directs freelancers to where they can find the resources they need to run an effective and successful freelance business.

I recommend it for anyone involved in freelance.

An absolute MUST READ for those who wish to become a freelance web designer! I had many questions about freelance web design, which I could not find the answers to anywhere. I stumbled upon this book by pure accident and thought I would give it a try. WOW! This book answered the vast majority of question I had. If your stumbling around looking for answers to questions to freelance web design, look no further. I discovered new ways to make my project management much more efficient. My proposals are of the highest professional manner keeping me ahead of the pack. This monument of a book is filled with so much useful information, that I actually caught myself highlighting entire pages. The only downside of this book is that it only applies to United States taxes. I live outside of the U.S.A. so those chapters were not entirely helpful. However, the message for taxes is generally the same... keep all your invoices, taxes, cheques, etc in order and up to date. Thank You Neil Tortorella for this masterpiece.
