Product Description

Nintendo developed Star Tropics for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Mike Jones goes to visit his uncle, Dr. Jones, on C-Island, only to find that he is missing when he gets to the island. Your task is to save your uncle! This adventure is far too grand for anyone island to contain! Star Tropics is a top-down, action-adventure, similar to the Legend of Zelda. Mike receives a yo-yo early in his adventure that serves as a weapon. Characters you meet further along in the game will upgrade it. You will also have to increase your health meter so that you can take more damage. Mike will encounter unique islanders, talking animals, ghosts, and even aliens! This game is an obscure and hidden treat that you need to experience. Prepare for an adventure that’s out of this world!

5.0 out of 5 stars May be the best NES game ever produced, October 24, 2005

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Startropics (Video Game)
Startropics, for those unfamiliar with this great game, is pretty much of the linear RPG type with some challenging puzzles thrown in the mix. You are Mike, who has just arrived at Coralcola to visit your uncle, Dr. J. You find out that he has been kidnapped and only you can save him.

Mike goes through the game equipped with a yo-yo. It proves to be a powerful tool, and it only gets stronger further into the game. You will most likely encounter some frustrating puzzles that seemingly have no solution, but have patience with this game. It is worth it when you figure it out. You will be tasked with conquering undergroung tunnels full of monsters, a haunted graveyard and more. Overall there is enough to do to take many hours away from your life.

This is my personal favorite NES game of all time, along with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, and if I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would. It was everything a game should be and I had a lot of fun (and frustration) playing this game. This is an essential title for NES owners, and can usually be found for cheap (under 10 bucks). Give it a try, I doubt you will be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to beat for 8-bit entertainment., April 9, 2002

In StarTropics, you assume the role of Seattle teenager Mike Jones. For the summer, you're visiting your uncle Steve (the world famous Dr. Jones) on Coralcola, the beautiful Pacific island where he's doing his research. But when you arrive, you find that "Dr. J" (as the natives call him) has been kidnapped! The island shaman places you under the mystical protection of the Southern Cross, and Chief Coralcola gives you the legendary island weapon...a yo-yo?! With only these and your wits, so begins your journey to rescue your uncle...

This is one heck of a fun game for the Nintendo Entertainment System! The graphics are good for the time (1990) and hold up even today. The music is all very good; cheerfully tropical in some cases, dark and foreboding in others. The gameplay manages to strike the balance of being not too easy that you can beat it in five minutes, but neither is it so hard you never finish it.

StarTropics is packed from beginning to end with plenty of humor ("Where are you from? Americola?"). It also has plot twist after plot twist, especially in the last three chapters of the game, and it branches off in directions you'd never imagine.

Highest possible recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best NES games ever produced!, January 19, 2002
This review is from: Startropics (Video Game)
This is a great game I still play. Once again as I do in most reviews I will say that this game does alos have a great soundtrack for a NES game. Here is the sotry, you land on an island, being a teenager, on this island is Dr.Jones' laboratory. But the thing is he isn't there, the chief of the village breaks the news to you that your uncle Dr.Jones has been abducted, well yeah it's pretty obvious you have to go looking for him. On your journey you will encounter many strange and evil creatures, your weapon? A yoyo! This yoyo was given to you by the chief of the village. This is a very fun game, at the end of the game is where it starts to get challenging, well the whole game is challenging but expect it to get harder and harder. This is a game I think everyone who is still playing NES, collects NES games or plans to go all retro to get. This is in my books one of the best NES games ever!
