Editorial Reviews

Review

"Starving Hearts is a stunning portrait of the 1950’s, the girls going for the MRS. Degree. Good work!" -- Rochelle Ratner, editor of BEARING LIFE & AMERICAN BOOK REVIEW

About the Author

Lynn Ruth Miller has been published in various fields for over thirty years. She often deals with feminist issues and has been featured on interview shows and adult education settings throughout the country. Her writing appeals to readers who enjoy Laurie Colwin for her ethnic flavor and commentary on the idiosyncrasies of modern life and Anne Tyler for her slightly out of sync frame of reference.

Her first published book was Starving Hearts, an autobiographical novel of life in the fifties and her successful struggle with anorexia and bulimia. It was published May, 2000 and its second edition was released January, 2001

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful first novel, January 18, 2001
By

What a vivid account of life during a time when the general public knew little about eating disorders and abusive relationships! It makes me feel much more sympathetic towards people whose behavior appears strange. While it describes complex family and social environments with strong religious overtones, this book is also a gripping story - hard to put down and with a great mixture of humor, emotion and drama. A wonderful first novel - I'm looking forward to No.2!

3.0 out of 5 stars dissapointed, March 12, 2005
This review is from: Starving Hearts (Paperback)
I really have no clue as to why this book is rated so highly. the writing is poor and immature, and the first 200 pages are like a broken record the song list of which is:
" My Bitchy Mother Hates Me"
" Daddy Save Me"
" I Can't get Married Therefore I'll Starve"
I actually disliked the main character for most of the time.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, i realize it takes guts to reveal your demons, but it doesn't have to be such a drag. I have experienced the hopelessness of eating disorders but i can express my feelings in more than the superficial and boring way that she does. The book actually doesn't do justice to the excruciating horror of eating disorders. Yes the story is tragic but a book needs a bit more than that to make it readable. Dull, Dull, Dull. i gave it 3 stars because the last 50 or so pages actually got to me. I don't know, i expected more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Starving Hearts, October 29, 2000

A most powerful story. Thankfully, I have never known the devastating details of anorexia and bulimia. This novel paints a vivid picture, and creates a huge sense of sympathy for those afflicted.

The writing is candid, the story is well-developed, and the characters are vivid. I truly enjoyed it, and wish the author much success with this "first" novel and future creations.
