Couldn't have survived college and post-college without it!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Starving Students' Cookbook: The Classic Guide for the Clueless Gourmet! (Paperback)
It wasn't so much college, as right afterwards, when money was tight, and Ramen noodles were considered a staple... The Starving Students Cookbook taught me a lot of really basic, but very tasty dishes that I still use today. My favorites include "Meatloaf Men Like" and "Easy Roast." I highly recommend this book to anyone living away from home for the first time, or who is just strapped for cash.

From breakfast to late night, apple pie to zucchini and eggs, "The Starving Students' Cookbook" has a little something for everyone. By keeping the recipes and ingredients both simple and easy, even the most 'culinary-challenged' person can whip up a great macaroni-tuna casserole previously thought unreachable! Also, this is a good cookbook for kids just learning to cook, and offers a little bit of everything. This is the second edition of "Starving Students'," with the most notable -- and welcome -- addition being the chapter on microwave cooking. All-around good food, cooking and nutrition tips make "The Starving Students' Cookbook" a welcome addition to any kitchen, large or small.

Great Book for Beginners on a Budget,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Starving Student's Cookbook (Paperback)
I first encountered "The Starving Student's Cookbook" the year it was released. Although I was a fairly accomplished cook, I was dealing with an extremely limited budget and a friend gave me the book thinking it might help me to cope. I found it immensely entertaining and, although it was geared to beginners and thus far below my skill level, it had tips that even I could use. If you are new to cooking, on a budget, or know some young (or not so young) person who needs help learning to feed themselves nutritiously and inexpensively, this book is a great place to start. It will teach you the basics with clear, gently humourous instructions.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought this cookbook for the staff to use at my disabled son's home. They need to cook for one and it is hard to find decent cookbooks. The staff rave about this cookbook. It is great! Easy to read, simple ingrediants and they love the picture of the which pot or pan to use.

Great for those that don't know how to cook or just want it simple,

I love this book. I have owned it since the '80's when my mom bought it for me when I was in college.
I only read one review that gave this book a low score. In it the genius says "I know how to cook" and "Anyone can fry an egg". So... why did he buy this book? If you are Emeril, then don't buy this book. This book is meant for us fools who actually don't really know how to fry eggs. Or more importantly, those of us who have lives outside the kitchen. If that is you, BUY THIS.

Buy it if you can't cook...or even if you can!,

I've owned a copy of this book for MANY years.
If you don't know how to cook - this is the book for you. The recipes are easy, simple, flavorful, and "stick to your ribs" - all while being on a budget. If you DO know how to cook - it's an excellent book to have for a quick change-of-pace meal, ideas for when you're craving some "comfort food", or as a base to add your own personal touches, to create your own nouvelle cuisine.

Delectable.,

Before this book, I couldn't really cook. Canned pasta, boiled eggs, toast. That was the extent of my expertise. Starving students is full of simple recipes and tips: what pots and pans to use, what ingredients can be substituted, etc. This is the only cookbook you really need on your shelf for everyday meals. Even I can bluff my way through it. Amazing.

Help for beginners, student or otherwise,
By YoMama (USA) - See all my reviews

The author does a good job of covering a lot of food choices; there's even a section for vegetarians. The handy hints - "Don't dump grease from cooked meat down the drain! Drain grease into old can and discard when solidified" - will be a great help, not only to students but to any novice cook out there. The style of the book though, could use a bit of pizzazz, especially since it's audience is 20-somethings who will need visual interest to draw them in. Other than that, this book will help a lot of kids who are feeding themselves for the first time. 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother

I have been out of college for many years and still love this book. I do not enjoy cooking and this book has a lot of great but simple ideas that don't require a ton of steps.
