3.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Message Screamed into Your Ear by an Angry Cat December 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Although I wouldn't call myself an 'expert' on Stoner Metal and Doom, I think it's safe to say that I am a fan of it. I own a bunch of albums by artists like Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Acid King, Boris and Sleep. So basically, I want to make you understand that it's not like I'm walking into Bongzilla with no idea what to expect.

The music is good and fun to nod or bang your head to. It's your standard groovy THC-fueled riffs, mid-tempo or slow, with a very thick, dirty sound. That's a formula that pretty much always works. I also like the lyrics, which focus on the transcendental power of marijuana. It brings humans together, it helps get people in touch with nature, and it's a huge source of inspiration. Then there's the opener, "Gestation", which talks about the growth and harvesting of cannabis almost as if it's a sacred ritual. You can tell these guys are pretty passionate about the stuff.

Between the songs there are what sounds like samples from a documentary about marijuana use in America. You can hear snatches from interviews with pot smokers and a news guy rattling off satistics, among other things. I like it when albums do this because it usually adds to the atmosphere of an album; something you can immerse yourself in.

The main problem with this record, and it is a big one, are the vocals. The singer sounds like a vengeful spirit from another dimension, screaming constantly in this gutteral, rattlely voice. Had I not had the lyrics booklit to read along with, I would have just assumed the singer was talking about death, hate, war, murder, and other Deathcore stuff. And that's what he sounds like he belongs in, a Deathcore band. It's really distracting and doesn't suit the subject matter of the songs at all. Think about the line "Load bongs, not guns".
