I have several books about art journaling, but this little book is the most inspiring and has some of the best ideas of all of them. The first thing I learned and the thing that is stressed all through this colorful book is to save everything and don't throw anything away, including junk mail. Author Cindy Shepard saves all kinds of ephemera and eventually recycles everything by using it in her journals.
Although some of the journals look complicated, most of them are fairly simple in nature to do. Shepard's best advice is to make your journals according to what inspires you and what you love. She even has directions in the book for making a journal dedicated to a pet. The journals shown and the directions that Cindy Shepard used to make her own are colorful, direct and not difficult to understand.
It is also a very fun-to-read book with excellent illustrations and the suggestions for what to use in journals is surprising because it can be just about anything around the house. Buttons, playing cards, junk mail, subscription cards out of magazines, pictures from magazines, whatever your eyes settle on that you like. Inspiration flows from the pages of "Stash and Smash."
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in art journaling or ideas for art projects.

While you have to hand it to the author, Cindy Shepard, for the sheer amount of work she did, this little book left me feeling: "Is that all there IS?" Yeah, we've all glued stuff onto other stuff, put pockets onto things that didn't have pockets and married fiber arts to ephemera. The absolute BEST part of the book is the cover -- visually, her book is a thing of beauty! Also, I don't get where the "smash" is in "Stash and Smash", but I do know that in the craft stores now, there is a whole section on this stuff. It's ironic that, in view of the fact that one is using found and otherwise unwanted materials, that this has become a big business. Additionally, read the MEAN-SPIRITED little permission disclaimer, " You may copy patterns in this book to make for 'pin money', but when you make more than 12, you have exceeded permission." Come on...let's not be capitalist pigs about this type of art!!!!!

This is a beautiful, colorful book. I read it from start to finish and I know I'll go back to it for ideas. I especially liked her suggestions on how to make my own books.
