5.0 out of 5 stars Still sharp, September 28, 2011

These guys just get better and better. The same quick witted style with a more modern sound. More than any other, this album really makes you feel what your listening to. I still get goosebumps when listening to the last song. Not sure why, but how many albums can you say do that? Just buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy to have their new album!, October 23, 2009
This review is from: State of the Art (Audio CD)
For once I'm happy with the "More Music From Your Previously Purchased Artists"...nice recommendation you made Amazon!

I heard of Hilltop Hoods and bought all of their available albums (downloaded from their website the ones that are no more available - by the way, that's nice of them to make them available like that for download) about 3 years ago...I really liked it...bought The Hard Road when it got out, so of course when I saw that they had a new one, I started wanting it at once!

Well, I feel it's the album I like most. Maybe it's because it's new and that I've listened to the other way too many times...but still, the first time I listened to the album, I felt that I like or love each and every song, while on an album of any artist there are always songs I don't really like...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, January 24, 2010

I love this cd and rate it as one of the top additions to my collection in 2009. I am the kind of guy who listens to a lot of different stuff. One day it is Johnny Cash, the next it is some unsigned band from down the road, the next day it is anyone's guess. I stumbled upon Hilltop Hoods and have been thoroughly impressed by their beats as well as the depth of the meaning in their lyrics. So often hip hop music brandishes lyrics that make no sense. I can only hear lyrics which talk about driving on dubs and pimping some hoes. Honestly I can't relate to that lifestyle. What I can relate to is giving 100%, living an honest life, and keeping it real. Hilltop Hoods deliver that and so much more in their music. Buy this cd. Get it stateside, and spread the word. They are worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilltop adds another strong performance, December 29, 2009
This review is from: State of the Art (Audio CD)
I've been a huge fan of Hilltop Hoods ever since I heard The Nosebleed Section many years back. Despite how overlooked this group tends to be in the States, they continue to be one of my favorite independent hip hop groups. Indy & underground hip hop is my favorite genre, so this really says a lot about the 'Hoods. This album will please hip hop heads, people who typically overlook the genre, and BASSHEADS - these songs bump, and the bass is super clean!

The Hilltop Hoods have put out three (and a half) extremely strong albums thus far, and this album continues the trend. Coming three years after their last full release, I was worried that they might have lost some of their energy and creativity, but this album measures up or exceeds their previous albums in my opinion. There isn't a single weak track on the disc, and in a day of single-happy groups, to come out with a disc that you can listen to the whole way through is a huge accomplishment. I don't give out five star ratings liberally for my itunes songs, but over half the tracks on this disc earned five stars for me.

My personal favorites (all rated 5/5) are Super Official (fun track, bump it in your car), Chase that Feeling (great samples, piano loop, awesome song to work out to), Still Standing (AWESOME AWESOME TRACK in every way), Classic Example, Last Confession (sweet piano and string lines and frenzied climax), Hillatoppa (dark, heavy, badass), Fift in Five (more mellow, great vocal samples), and State of the Art Bonus Track (a fun instrumental, good table work).

Definitely buy this! I pre-ordered it as soon as they announced the album, and with shipping it ran me a full $28 - worth EVERY penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Album? At least the most catchy music and lyrics!, December 26, 2009

This review is from: State of the Art (Audio CD)
I had the extreme pleasure of visiting Australia and while there a friend turned me on to the Hilltop's album: The Calling. I was instantly hooked. The 'Hoods have a refreshingly "old-school" feel to their music that harkens back to the "Golden Era" of Hip-Hop which many believe was in '94 (as it says in the liner notes from State of the Art). The lyrics are witty and contemporary, and the music and beats are top-notch and recorded with excellent clarity.
I am a fan of all their other albums, but this newest installment is by far (in my opinion) their best work to date. Super catchy and rythmic. To the point & a lot of heart. I encourage you- if you have heard the Hilltop Hoods before- you WILL like this album. If you haven't heard these lyrical genius' at work, this is a fantastic album to start with.
They've been in the game for "more than 10 years" and it shows in the full production of this classic album.

If you are even a moderate fan of their older stuff, you'll being listening to this one on repeat. I don't even listen to hip hop much, but love Hilltop Hoods. Everyone that I've turned on to this group has really liked them, so chances are you'll like them as well. If you haven't traveled much & spent time with Aussies, the accent might throw you off a bit at first. Give it a chance, it will grow on you. They're all great, but my stand-out tracks are: Super Official, She's So Ugly, Chris Farley, Hillatoppa, and 50 in Five.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.25 Stars! Another Dope CD from the Australian Rap Group!!, September 16, 2009
This review is from: State of the Art (Audio CD)
Hilltop Hoods are so slept on despite being one of the dopest groups out. They have been dropping superb albums in Australia for the better part of this decade and their latest is just another dope CD to add to their catalog.

For those who don't know what to expect, you should hit up Youtube and peep their videos to get the full effect. This group is just dope raw hip-hop. You got beats that would mess with the best ones coming out of NYC and raw, honest emceeing that really moves the crowd. There is simply nothing not to like.

This is one of the few CDs that is affordable in the states since a lot of their stuff is subject to import fees, but I definitely recommend this CD 100% as a great place to start with the Hilltop Hoods.
