3.0 out of 5 stars Doom/Thrash Hybrid, June 13, 2008
This review is from: State of Disconnection (Audio CD)
1992's State of Disconnection is the third album from Swedish metal band Stillborn. This is one of those albums that I seem to run across every couple of years in clearance bins, and I finally decided to try it out, based almost entirely on the fact that it was the oldest Century Media release I've encountered.

Stillborn is easily the least melodic Swedish band I've ever heard, which makes them the only non-melodic Swedish band I've ever heard. Their sound is definitely metal, but it seems to tread the line between doom and thrash, which is a pretty rare thing given the wide differences, especially in tempo, between the two styles of metal. One minute they're riffing through some Anacrusis-style technical thrash, the next it's heavy Solitude Aeternus-style doom. The constant throughout these shifts is the band's high level of musicianship and Henke Karlsson's gravelly vocals.

State of Disconnection is a perfectly solid metal album, but not a must-have by any means. If you're into thrash or into doom (or better yet, into both), then you'll probably enjoy it. I'm not passionate about either style, so this album didn't do too much for me. At least now I know what their sound was, and as I was told every weekday afternoon in the mid 1980's, knowing is half the battle.
