State Fair with Pat Boone, Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin,
By Rich Allan (Dallas, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: State Fair [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This version of State Fair from the 1950's is far superior to the earlier version, but is hard to find. Pat Boone was in his prime and perfect as the innocent farm boy who falls for the big city showgirl Ann Margaret. There are great songs, beautiful color and real scenes from the biggest state fair in the country at Dallas, Texas. Star turns are taken by Tom Euwell (Seven Year Itch) as he sings, "Sweet Hog of Mine." Bobby Darin, pop singer, in a rare film appearance, falls for the sister, and gets to croon a couple of love songs. This film deserves to be issued on DVD and is a must for collectors of musical comedies.

Saw Both State Fairs, and the Latter Is Better,
By CalCruisin "CalCruisin" (California) - See all my reviews

I have seen both movie versions of State Fair, the earlier one from 1945 and the latter one from 1962. They are both entertaining musicals with funny rural vignettes and wonderful songs. However, I saw the latter version first, and was dissappointed when I saw the earlier one. Why? Becasue the romance between Pat Boone and Ann-Margaret was absolutely charming in the latter version. All the positives in the earlier film could not make up for their absence.

Best ever "State Fair",
By Tweety (Brisbane, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: State Fair [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I've only rated this 3 stars as it's VHS not DVD. If available on DVD it would be a definate 5. It's a perfect mix of comedy, romance and drama. How can you not help cheer for "Blue Boy" and laugh at the mince meat judging. This movie is what a lot of movies today are missing - heart. PLEASE bring it out on DVD.

Pat Boone Rules!!Where Are His Other Movies?!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: State Fair [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Pat Boone rules in this great musical co-starring Anne Margaret. It's unfortunate though that his other movie musicals etc fron the 1950's and 60's have never been released on video such as Bernardine-1957,Mardi Gras-1958,April Love-1957,All Hands on Deck-1961,The Main Attraction-1962,The Yellow Canary-1963,The Horror of it All-1963,Never Put it in Writing-1964,The Perils of Pauline-1967.So spread the word,it's been very, very long overdue!!Video Distributors both large and small including Fox Home Entertainment should aggressively pursue the release of these wonderful and forgotten gems !!I mean Elvis, as great as he was, shouldn't get all the glory!!

1933 was the first version starring Will Rogers. And while the 1945 version became a classic in its own right, both were staged from the Iowa State Fairs. Then came this 1962 version with the setting of the Texas State Fair including Big Tex as one of its star attractions. While the plots are basically the same, this version taps into race car fans alike and while the Texas State Fair had no race track of its own, the race track that was filmed was from the Oklahoma State Fair's Grandstand Speedway track which still exists as an active race car dirt track. All versions need to be seen during Fair season, you'll appreciate each.

Pretty good version thanks to Darin, Margaret, Cox,
This review is from: State Fair [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles.
He's at his punky best as the ambitious guy on the make, and delivers the best number of the movie in This Isn't Heaven, a song written especially for the movie. I wish he'd been cast in more musicals to utilize his wide range of talents, but it's great to see him here. Esp in the same movie with Ann Margaret, another triple threat.

This is a movie that I have personally wanted to own for quite some time,if you're anything like me and have bouts of nostalgia from time to time then you know what I mean this is a remake of the classic with Dana Andrews,Jeanne Crain, and Dick Haymes if you like movie musicals like I do then you should find this movie to your liking I of course like the songs after all it is Rodgers and Hammerstein and the on screen chemistry is great this movie has just the right balance of romance, music humor and intrigue to keep you entertained I would heartily recommend this movie if musicals is your genre check it out it's a great state to be in also I would recommend Brigadoon with Gene Kelly.

Not as Good as the original,
By
This review is from: State Fair [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This rendition of State Fair pales far in comparison to the original with Dana Andrews. The parents seem like they actually hate each other, and the mealy-mouth Margie has absolutely no chemistry with her beau. The only redeeming quality in this movie would have to be Pat Boone and Ann-Margret, they're cute together and A-M's version of "Isn't Kinda Fun" goes from stupid to steamy, and turns out kind of coo However, even these two don't compare with the originals. If you want to see State Fair, see the 1945 version.
