The author, a highly regarded travel writer, rightly points out that while national parks are often crowded, expensive, and difficult to reach, state parks are havens of peace and relaxation. Her area of interest covers 12 Midwestern states, and she includes information of interest to everyone willing to get off the road for a while and see some of the wonders of America's heartland. Unlike the often hyperbolic prose found in books about the national parks, DeHaan takes a "tell-it-like-it-is" approach to relate the story of each park in an intelligent, but not overly sentimental, manner, leaving the real discovery of the park to the visitor. She includes information on how to get to a park, what special events occur during the year, addresses, telephone numbers, and, in some cases, locations of nearby airports. This is an essential purchase for any travel collection, especially for libraries in the Midwest.
