4.0 out of 5 stars Low expectations caused a pleasant surprise August 15, 2010
By Sanket
Format:Audio CD
After the ASOT 2009 debacle, I was having low expectations. But I finally bought it and gave a listen.

CD 1: Almost instantly apart from track 2, I hated all the other tunes.
But after a month, I can honestly say that all the tunes have grown on me (Except track 5). This is exactly the characteristic of a classic CD in the making. You have to give it time to start liking it. It is still a notch under CD 1 of ASOT 2007 which I consider pinnacle of progressive trance of recent times. Only criticism here is the inclusion of too many guitar samples. (Major Highlights: track 1, 2, 4 and 7.)

CD 2: It has a great opener with lovely vocals of Aruna and from there is a explosive dance floor journey. Apart from Faithless tune which was poor excuse to remixing, the other tunes flow well. (Major Highlights: track 1 perhaps. Frankly, I didn't quite like CD 2 but I always buy and rate ASOTS based on their CD 1)

I hope most people have similar thoughts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing. January 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have been hooked on Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance compliations since I purchased the 2007 album. 2007 was the best I've heard thus far, and 2008 is a distant second, but still solid.

I got the 2010 ASOT album for Christmas, expecting the same danceable, uplifting formula that Armin always seems to deliver. The first CD grew on me after a few listens; I now listen to it regularly in my car. You can expect to hear deep, melodic trance that truly makes you feel as if you are on the beach. Mr. Van Buuren knows how to perfectly set that kind of vibe. If you're not turned off by an excess of guitar samples (which, to me, made CD1 borderline cheesy), you may also thoroughly enjoy the first CD.

CD2 was an utter disappointment, in my mind. After the first track, featuring breathy, sultry vocals from Aruna, I completely lost interest in the remainder of the CD. The other tracks were average at best - at times completely forgettable. It sounds as if Armin were in a rush to get the album done and started throwing tracks together. No flow or consistency whatsoever!

I am giving the entire album three stars on merit of the first CD alone. I tend to enjoy the "On the Beach" CDs more anyway. Here's to hoping Armin will create a more memorable mix in 2011.

4.0 out of 5 stars State of Trance 2010: Once again excellent June 30, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Armin is back with another gorgeous compilation of trance music in this ASOT 2010 album. A bit whimsical, melodic, and more downbeat than past offerings, ASOT 2010 doesn't disappoint. It is not Armin's best, (my personal favorite being ASOT 2007 & Universal Religion 2008), but it stands up to the test unless you're a hater with an axe to grind. This album has a chill vibe, especially in the first CD. CD one doesn't launch with a ton of energy, with track 1 "Closer" not really getting the intensity up. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty song, but not the usual show stopper that Armin's known for to kick off his albums (for example, "Another Day on the Terrace" from Universal Religion 2008--that song gives you chills). Happily, things get stronger as the album moves on, with a solid 14 tracks on CD one that move easily from spectrum to spectrum of dance-tronica. CD 2 is not a solid. I've never cared for the "club" CDs nearly as much as the "beach" CDs, and ASOT 2010 is no exception. I buy these albums for CD1, with a hope that CD2 will have a few solid tracks. It does, but it's not really a 5-star effort in my mind at least.

4/5 Stars. Solid, very worth the purchase, but not a 5-star collection. Here's hoping Armin continues to produce ASOT well into the 2020s.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Since 2007 May 13, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've been listening to Armin for years and years and this album is definitely his best in a long time. I absolutely loved ASOT 2007. The first CD (On the Beach) was one of the best summer compilations anyone has ever produced. After that 2008 was decent, but as a whole it was lacking the careful ordering and selection from the year prior. 2009 had a better track selection than 2008 (especially CD2), but the composition was even worse on CD1. He seemed to be able to get one CD or the other decent, but never get back to the mix quality that once was there.

Armin's finally back in the game with 2010 though. While the first CD is still no where near as good as 2007, it's significantly better than both 2008 and 2009 combined. The selection and ordering has improved tremendously on CD1 and he returns to a nicer upbeat summer feel that was missing the past two years. CD2 is similarly well done and has a great nighttime feel.

If you were skeptical of this year after hearing the last two years, don't be. 2010 is a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good entry in the series July 8, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A good entry in the series, but earlier entries were better. Still, there are some gems here, but honestly 2011 is better than this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Armin Van Buuren SOT 2010 January 13, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Just another classic release from the worlds greatest DJ. If you like Trance music and love Trance music then this album is a must. A little softer than some of his other SOT albums, but still a great mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a trance fiend March 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of trance and I have really come to like Armin Van Buuren's version of the genre. Most of my early trance favorites were Paul Oakenfold and DJ Tiesto. Van Buuren is considered to be quite similar in some ways to his mentor (Tiesto) and there are some elements of Van Buuren that I prefer to his mentor. Van Buuren's Armada label has a really nice collection of up and coming artists as well, that I find myself checking out. I like the direction that trance seems to be going in.

3.0 out of 5 stars State of Trance is in the shamble!
Probably one of the worst recent AVB set of late. I think it's just plain and bland with exceptions of a few tracks, not to mention bad mixing.
