Editorial Reviews

Review

''The President should've paid attention to the old advertising slogan: 'Don't Mess with Texas'... a gutsy political thriller with non-stop action, combining Tom-Clancyesque technical and political detail alongside dialogue and fast-moving action reminiscent of Western novels. The fast-paced action follows a broad cast of characters in both the White House and in Austin as Roberts weaves a tale that is very fanciful without being completely unbelievable.'' --Dave Mundy, General Manager & Editor, The Gonzales Cannon Newspaper

''...This book illustrates how important it is to elect liberty-loving leaders who are more willing to rebel than compromise. A State of Treason is ripped from today's headlines--the federal government is indeed lawless, anti-Constitutional, and oppressive. Tyranny is devouring our freedom and Texans must soon decide how long these evils are sufferable. Because when Texans finally say 'Enough is enough!' we will enter a long-delayed State of Treason and there will be no option other than to win--or die.'' --Heidi Hansing Theiss, Radio Host, Tea Party Activist, City Council Member

The winds of secession are blowing again in the State of Texas. In this all too real fictional novel ,David Thomas Roberts creates an account of the unfolding of events as Texas proceedes to put into action processes that will lead to its independence from the Union.Although supposedly " a fictional narrative, the stotyline and the characters are for entertainment purposes only.It is not intended to imply any real person actually made statements, nor acted in any manner consistent with the storyline of this novel." As you read this novel, you will feel that it is uncanny in both the believability of the main characters and their actions;and some of what is taking place today;that it will send shivers up your spine. If this novel was written 10 or so years ago,it would easily be dismissed as pure hokum,;but not so today.
Texas has had more than it can take from actions by Washington and now are going to put it to the people in a vote to see if they want to secede. The Federal Government, decides to use any and every means possible, whether legal or not to prevent Texas from breaking away from the Union.
There are no holds barred ,and it doesn't take long for lives to be lost.
An interesting and appropriate concept used by the author is to start of each of the 51 chapters with a quotation from historical and recent American and world leaders who made profound statements concerning Rights,Patriotism,Tyranny,Liberty,Dissent,Consent,Protest,Constitution and the Right to Bear Arms,Revolution,Rebellion, etc.;all which are part of living in and believing in Life,Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Such things happened before in America's history and the abuse of power can result in such happenings again.

Again, this book could be pulled from today's headlines. It picks up where the previous book (Patriot's of Freedom) left off. Exciting from the first pages. You will not be able to put this book down. I found the direction of the book to be very believable. I also loved the ending. If you like action and relevant subject matter, you will love this book. Hope the author has a third book in the works!

To anybody that's not a Texan this may just be a good book, for me a Texan first, it was awesome. Although a work of fiction today 10-20-14, those with eyes to see would acknowledge it could easily be fact tomorrow! God bless Texas. -Edgar, proud Texan, Montgomery co. Texas

At the outset, I should note that this review is based on a review copy of *A State of Treason*.

Mr. Roberts' new book is heroic fiction of the first order. His well-constructed writing is direct and eloquent. Be aware that the emotion his book evokes can be trying at times. Periodically, I had to disengage from reading in order to compose myself. On occasion, the story offers a powerful hint of the Constitutional issues involved, which combined with the quotes preceding each chapter, are educationally suggestive for those willing to pursue their own investigations. My single criticism is that the author made an effort to tie up loose ends too abrubtly, within the final few pages. Still, the reading, and pleasure therefrom, proceeded wonderfully!

Broad outline of the book's content, as story, is adequately described in other reviews here. I shall not duplicate their work. However, I'd like to make a couple of points.

The first, within Mr. Roberts' novel, is the centrality of the Texas Rangers as a law enforcement agency in perfect accord with Texas in its conflict with the Federal Government. By an odd coincidence, this morning I came upon a news item from Texas. On February 14, in Bryan, Texas, a meeting of an organization named Republic of Texas was raided by FBI agents, and among others, the Texas Rangers. All of the attendees were fingerprinted and photographed; all cell phones and personal recording devices were confiscated. No arrests were made.

Second, more than once within the novel, a character's question is asked rhetorically to the effect of: "How did the United States get to this point . . .". The point being not only the specific conflict immediate in the story, but the many decades (if not longer), prefatory to the story's main conflict.

During the mid-20th century there was first a radio show followed by the powerful CBS television series featuring Walter Cronkite called YOU ARE THERE - an important American historical educational program that reenacted historical events. That is the tenor of this new novel - the credible immediacy of his well thought out plot and characterization places the reader directly in the middle of a crisis that could easily happen. It is docudrama/historical fiction/terrifying `what if' as is fine as any being offered today.
