Batagraf's aim is true, March 21, 2006

Batagraf's "Statements" is a very good album. Atypical of some of Jon Balke's other work, in that it features 4 percussionists, sax, trumpet, and keys. More beat-oriented than many ECM recordings; which, in this case, is a good thing. Sidsel Endresen renders smooth abstract poetics that neither obstruct nor abstract the backing tracks. Arve Henriksen lends his unique brand of horn. Good composition, tight playing, and classic ECM quality recording. Did I mention the "unknown media announcers"? This isn't the usual jazz standards routine. More adventurous and edgy. Once again, a very good record.
