Book Description

April 3, 2001
Can you find love in Love, Virginia? Is there inspiration in Inspiration, Arizona? Brad Herzog took stock of his Generation X lifestyle and didn't like what he discovered. So he and his wife emptied their bank accounts, packed everything into a Winnebago, and set a course for a fabled America they weren't sure existed.

What began as a literal search for the small places on the map became a figurative examination of the small places of the heart, a quest for virtues lost amid negativity and disillusionment. From Justice, West Virginia, where one-half the population descends from the Hatfields and McCoys, to Harmony, California, a town that's up for sale and can be yours for the right price, States Of Mind eloquently and intelligently brings into focus an American psyche often blurred by intersecting cultures -- and is, ultimately, an unforgettable journey all its own.

Review

The Orlando Sentinel (FL) States Of Mind is a wonderful surprise, superbly written and inspirational....Brad Herzog reaches beyond the obvious and always finds great meaning and insight in the spectacles of everyday life.

From the Back Cover

Is there love in Love, Virginia, or hope in Hope, Mississippi? Brad Herzog, a disillusioned Generation X-er and his wife traversed the country in a 34-foot Winnebago in an attempt to seek out the states of mind so elusive in the eyes of Americans today. They turned a literal search for small places on the map into a figurative examination of the small places of the heart.

In this journey across America, Herzog reports on the state of 18 tiny towns and villages. States of Mind goes beyond the traditional travel narrative, presenting the small town as microcosm and the hamlet as allegory.

For example, in Comfort, Texas, Herzog examines the concept of comfort as it applies to roots, loyalty to home, and America's nomadic tradition. He unearths the fact that the town, founded by German immigrants, is the site of the only Union monument on Confederate soil, dedicated to several dozen German freethinkers who refused to pledge loyalty to the Confederacy and were then slaughtered while trying to escape to Mexico.

Through its setting, its history, or its remarkable citizens, each town provided Herzog with a way to merge the literal and figurative. Triumph, Louisiana, located at the end of the Mississippi River, has been completely destroyed twice by hurricanes_and rebuilt twice. Freedom, Wyoming, is a state-line town founded by a Mormon polygamist escaping religious persecution. Half the population of Justice, West Virginia, consists of descendants of the infamous Hatfields and McCoys. Hope, Mississippi, is near the site where three civil-rights workers were murdered in 1964. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally!, April 7, 2000
By sheer luck, I grabbed Brad Herzog's "States of Mind" off the shelves after it was released last summer, since it looked like an 'inspirational' sort of read, to tackle during my week-long vacation. WOW! I LOVED THIS BOOK ... And since then, hadn't found anyone else who had read it, although I've recommended it to many. Its great to see that the "Millionaire" show, by coincidence, has brought this free-spirited and smart travel piece to its deserving rank. Highly, highly recommended for anyone in our business-obsessed world who is looking to rediscover inspiration, hope, and the thirst for discovery and adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A couple's journey across America, September 26, 1999
By A Customer
The answers to Brad Herzog's cryptic questions asked in this travelogue are all a resounding yes! These ideals exist beyond the commercial hype. Brad and wife Amy felt everyday negativism trickle upon them. As a result they sold everything, bought an enormous vehicle and took to the road. He wrote the words and she snapped those gorgeous photos.

We all have that need to find out what is out there, away from the jaded city environment, and beyond all of the rushed lunches and hate-filled traffic jams.

The Herzogs found it. And once the thing was written, Brad found me, an old buddy from high school, on the beaches of carmel. We set out to find the right publisher, and we did. The rest is his-story.

For me, this book is about remembering to avoid saying no. It should be an inspiration to us all (especially in Inspiration, AZ), and a reminder that America is out there.

Now log off and go drive somewhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Informative, July 19, 1999
By A Customer
Brad Herzog has done a masterful job of providing insight into America by searching for lost virtues in several tiny American cities and towns. This book was not only interesting, it was a lesson in history. I highly recommend "States of Mind" to anyone who enjoys a good travelogue and who is craving a different angle than what most travel books offer.
