Editorial Reviews

Listeners first got the chance to hear the astonishing guitar skills and spine-tingling singing of Blind Willie McTell in 1927, the year he first stepped into a recording studio (for Victor Records). Here are 69 of the extraordinary tracks that came next (through 1935), recordings that have bewitched blues lovers ever since: Statesboro Blues; Travelin' Blues; Drive Away Blues; Kind Mama; Atlanta Strut; My Baby's Gone; Death Room Blues; Broke Down Engine; Dying Gambler; God Don't Like It; Runnin' Me Crazy; Dirty Mistreater; You Was Born to Die; Georgia Rag; Stomp Down Rider , and more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Liner Notes, But Poor Sound Quality July 28, 2008
Format:Audio CD
This three-cd set has excellent liner notes, giving us a detailed account of Willie McTell's life, but the sound quality on the JSP McTell box set is far superior to what we get from Document Records. I recommend the JSP box set, as it is cheaper, has equally satisfying liner notes, and also features McTell's Library of Congress songs which he recorded for Lomax. There is nothing bad about this set, though. If you can find it at a really cheap price, go for it! However, Document Records' discs are usually not cheap!
