Grade 3-5-- Even though this book opens with a bit of fictionalizing, it soon settles into being an effective, informative biography about an impressive, inspirational woman. In short, readable chapters Weidt recounts Roosevelt's lonely childhood and strict upbringing, her marriage to Franklin, and the years after his death. Occasional quotes from letters or other primary sources enliven the text and help personalize the subject. Terms that youngsters might not understand, such as settlement house, are explained in follow-up sentences. Full-page black-and-white drawings are appropriately placed and vary in effectiveness. Franklin's affair with Lucy Mercer is handled candidly yet tactfully, and is seen as contributing to Eleanor's lack of self-confidence.
