Editorial Reviews

2010 release from the Prog Metal vocalist and Dream Theater frontman, his first solo effort in over five years. Static Impulse is by far his heaviest to date and is sure to please his legion of diehard fans as well as win over many new devotees in the process. James LaBrie is regarded as one of the most influential Prog Metal vocalists of the last 20 years. His significance as the commanding front man of the gods of virtuoso playing techniques, Dream Theater, is without question. His impact has been felt far and wide and rumors of this release have been circulating for a couple of years now with fans eagerly anticipating his latest solo venture.

Although his solo projects outside of Dream Theater have been rather few and far between recently, James LaBrie has very consistently proven himself to be an extremely solid solo artist and "Static Impulse" certainly does not tarnish that reputation in the least despite a rather brazen shift from his generally more progressive tendencies to a much more aggressive modern metal style with this release. A key part of LaBrie's success on this front has been his ability to not only surround himself with some of the most talented musicians on the scene, but to function with them much more as a band unit than a bunch of hired hands collecting a paycheck to pull off someone else's musical vision. Fans of "Elements of Persuasion," LaBrie's last solo effort (and a masterpiece in itself in my opinion), will undoubtedly be very happy to see the return of longtime LaBrie collaborator Matt Guillory (previously of Dali's Dilemma) on keyboards as well as the return of Italian guitar sensation Marco Sfogli, who steps out of the Petrucci shadow and truly comes into his own with his monster guitar work on this album. Both brought an unparalleled level of musicianship and songwriting to "Elements" and while the style of "Static Impulse" is a bit different with less emphasis on the hard-edged electronica sound that permeated "Elements" and a lot more emphasis on crunch, the group certainly still gels very well as far as striving to consistently write extremely melodic songs that are very listenable while delivering plenty of punch.Read more ›

Static Impulse is the second (fourth if you count the two Mulmuzzler albums) solo album from Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie. Given the consistency of his previous solo work (most recently the excellent Elements of Persuasion), I thought I knew exactly what to expect from Static Impulse. It took all of 20 seconds of album opener "One More Time" to shatter those expectations.

With Static Impulse, LaBrie has decided to go beyond the kind of melodic progressive metal he's known for, bringing in more aggressive elements. Not only is this a much heavier album than his previous work (with the exception of Dream Theater's Train of Thought), LaBrie brought in Peter Wildoer (Darkane) on drums and to add a hefty amount of screaming vocals. Between Wildoer's influence and that of returning bandmates Matt Guillory and Marco Sfogli, Static Impulse has a sound that's half Evergrey and half Soilwork. It's still very melodic with some progressive touches, but Static Impulse is a darker, heavier James Labrie album that's absolutely captivating and has a ton of energy. Oh, and LaBrie sounds pretty good too! I've always been a big fan of his vocals, but I hear so much more passion for the songs on this album than I have on recent Dream Theater offerings. He's just as brilliant on slower, more melodic songs like the haunting "Euphoric" as he is playing counterpoint to Wildoer's harsh vocals on the thrashing "One More Time" and "This Is War."

Is it a progressive metal album?

I noticed the first reviewer mentioned that James Labrie made a "heavier" album this time around but still melodic..yes it is still melodic but I wouldn't necessarily say "heavier" but more like aggressive. The last AWESOME & brilliant album he put out ('Elements of Persuasion') was very heavy but slower/mid-paced while this new disc is just chock full of fast paced anthems with the exception of the last track which is simply one of the most beautiful & touching songs I've ever heard! All in all James' last 2 discs are so good that I almost wish he continued on without Dream Theater or have them morph into a heavier band like they used to be YEARS ago! Get it without delay!!

PS: For those who may or may not like deep/harsh vocals they are used prominently in this album so be prepared! They go with the music so those who might not like them might see how well harsh vocals can be used if applied in the right musical setting.

WOW!!!!!i really did not expect this from james, after countless works with dream theater, solo, mullmuzzler,,and all the rest.
he is skilled, combining hard driven vocal growling, and then melody which is his forte.i didn't think i would like this cd,after elements of persuasion melded together as a big gob of barely listenable music.then i listened to it more, and started to sense the changing of james' solo work.
i suppose when you are a fan of an artists real band you expect similarities in their solo is these solo outings that allow the inner creativity to work.static impulse is a great is far better than "elements",and shows alot more of james' artistic genious.
let's face it,metal is a different beast these days and is divided into many different parts,or types.james taps into that, and remains a powerful force.since mike portnoy left dream theater maybe james will have a larger role in the music of the band.a dt fan for life i have to say anything james has contributed over the years have been outstanding pieces.
opening track,"ONE MORE TIME'blasts you into the couch, and shows james' versatility as a vocalist, and as you move through the album you get a true sense of how artistic he really is.the song "EUPHORIA" is more of a mullmuzzler type song, and this album is just chock full of little trinkets of awesomeness....
any fan of james' has to have this cd,any metalhead has to have this cd,everyone should have this cd.....
