5.0 out of 5 stars Shoot film? Make prints? Essential item, December 2, 2005
By
This review is from: Static-Master Brush 1" (Electronics)
The best and most effective tool for getting dust and lint off negatives and slides before they go into the scanner or enlarger. Cleans film without electrostatic charge builup that attracts more airborne particles. I know of nothing else that's even close to equally effective. Dramatically reduces time spent cloning/spotting/retouching. For digital scanner users, greatly reduces post-scan effort in situations where digital dust removal often fails or produces unwanted side effects (on B+W and on Kodachrome).

Pros: Produces negatives/slides that are very close to dust- and lint-free

Cons: Polonium cartridge needs replacing every 3-5 years, and proper disposal requires mailing old cartridge to a qualified disposal facility (free except for the envelope and stamp).

I can't imagine scanning 35mm film without one of these. I REALLY can't imagine wet darkroom printing without one.

2.0 out of 5 stars No noticeable difference (except the price), October 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Static-Master Brush 1" (Electronics)
I used a new Static-Master brush for cleaning slides prior to scanning. I tried several different techniques for cleaning my slides, including using a plain soft brush (no polonium). Honestly, I could not tell a difference in the effectiveness of the various cleaning strategies I used. Definitely not worth the extra cost for StaticMaster.

Like any brush, this one cleans off loose dust and lint, but does not remove years-old specks that are stuck to the film. The specks are a far greater problem on many of your old slides.

Definitely not worth the extra cost for StaticMaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for scanning slides, February 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Static-Master Brush 1" (Electronics)
After careful observation, this product is amazing at removing dust, particularly loose dust, from the surface of a slide. If you are scanning slides yourself, you need this product. I pass the StaticMaster over both sides of each slide I scan. This product does not remove fingerprints, scratches, or spots caused by something other than dust.
