This is the story of the building of the Jersey zoo, a lifelong ambition of British naturalist, Gerald Durrell. Like many of his previous books, this one is narrated by actor Nigel Davenport. Davenport is Durrell by now, and we would probably be disappointed to hear the author's real voice. The production values are excellent, and the content interesting to all who like animal stories. This makes an ideal purchase for libraries with James Herriot fans. The packaging is attractive, the narration appealing and the story charming. One criticism is the way the author shamelessly solicits funds for his zoo--understandable given Durrell's zeal about his zoo. E.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Loads of Laughter,

I particularly like Gerald Durrell's books because of his humor. I lent it to my sick friend and she laughed so hard she got better. My mom has to yank it away from me before I listen when she wants something done. I am sure you will buy up the whole series when you read one of his books. Be patient at first and then it gets better.

A passionate and funny plea for zoo conservation work,

Nowadays, a good many zoos are seriously involved in conservation work, the last hope for some of the most endangered species on the planet. In the 1970s, that wasn't the case. This book was Durrell's polemic against the keeping of wild animals purely for entertainment purposes, an impassioned plea for things to change. In a series of seven essays he set out the case for zoological gardens to be genuine centres of scientific excellence devoted to the preservation and breeding of the animals in their care, and described the work of the zoo he had set up for this purpose. He made himself highly unpopular in some quarters with his stinging criticism of then-current practice, not least because it's well and entertainingly written, a successful appeal to the public at large to support his campaign. The first chapter is a little dry, but after that this is a fascinating description of the work of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. Funny, moving, and utterly devoted to the animals without ever lapsing into saccharine sentiment, this is well worth a read.
