Book Description

July 31, 2000
This is complete reproduction of the contents of the latest official U.S. Census Bureau Statistical Abstract CD-ROM - and at only HALF of the price charged by the government! Released by the Bureau in early 2000, this amazing disc contains over 1600 tables and charts, making it the best known and most popular single source of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of our great nation. The Abstract has been published since 1878 and serves as a convenient, easy-to-use reference source. It provides an extensive selection of statistics for the United States, with selected data for States, metropolitan areas, cities, and foreign countries from reports and records of government and private agencies. The Census Bureau declares that the Statistical Abstract is "the government's most important statistical factbook - great for students, libraries, research organizations, or home reference." It is truly an incredible resource for any curious mind!

New topics covered include employment and wages in the information technology industry, criminal victimization at school and breast-feeding of infants. Although the book's emphasis is on national data, many tables present figures for regions and individual States. Should the reader need further information, the Statistical Abstract furnishes titles of additional statistical publications and sources.

The CD-ROM edition contains more years of data, more countries, and more categories of subjects than in the print edition. The CD-ROM also provides over 1,600 table-to-spreadsheet links, direct table-to-Internet site links, and search capabilities on table number and titles as well as general subjects. The Adobe Acrobat PDF software used to view the data offers the advantage of high quality printing and viewing. Tables and charts appear in color highlighting important information and adding clarity to the graphics. The Adobe Acrobat search function allows for easy searching--simply enter a keyword or phrase for a full text search of all files, including text within graphics and charts. Searching by general subjects and table numbers and titles is also supported. By using Lotus worksheet (.WK1) files or Excel (.XLS) files, you can do your own analysis of Statistical Abstract tables, state rankings, and the population of metropolitan areas. The spreadsheet files can be opened directly by clicking on a button at the bottom of each table or directly from spreadsheet software. The CD-ROM also provides more than 1,000 direct table-to-Internet site links. "With our new CD-ROM you can easily get the latest population and money income figures from our Internet links to many Federal agency sites and start your own analysis of the latest trends," says Lars Johanson of the Statistical Abstract staff. Adobe Acrobat Reader plus Search 4.0 is included on the CD; the Microsoft Excel viewer is included for users that do not have either Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 installed.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

For this edition, the Census Bureau has improved and enhanced data on the disc and the software used for accessing the information:

* The table of contents page now has a PDF of the Census Bureau web site. This enables direct links to the Statistical Abstract and its supplements and other features, such as Statistics in Brief and Frequently Requested Tables. * A link to the table of contents from the first text page of each section facilitates quick movement between sections. * New PDFs provide more explanation of several major economic series including the Federal Budget, the National Income and Product Accounts (NIPA), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI), and the new North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Another PDF provides information on the Federal court system. Links to these supplemental materials are provided from each appropriate table. * A separate PDF presents a compilation of tables showing major economic indices, as selected by the Council of Economic Advisors. * Maps of each state and their metro areas and component counties, maps outlining National Park sites throughout the country, a map of the United States with major transportation facilities and routes, a U.S. map locating coal mines and facilities, and one depicting the distribution of forest land have been added.

Several sections have preliminary data from the 1997 Economic Census, which presents industry statistics for the first time based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Comparative data for 1992 and 1997, based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), are also presented. Business tables present summary data for industries. Other new tables cover such topics as the foreign-born population, health care expenditures, the medicare trust fund, violence in schools, presale handgun checks, recycling programs, defense related employment and spending, workplace violence, ownership of mutual funds, computer use, results of the 1997 Census of Agriculture, and mail order catalogue sales. In addition to the above new tables, the Bureau hase also developed a new section, 20th Century Statistics. This section introduces data beginning in 1900 on a broad range of subjects, including population, vital statistics, health, education, income, labor force, communications, agriculture, defense, and other areas.

The Statistical Abstract tables and the population of metropolitan areas appendix table are also available in both Excel (.xls) and Lotus spreadsheet (.wk1) formats. In most cases, these spreadsheet files offer the user direct access to more data than either shown in the publication or Adobe Acrobat. These files usually contain more years of data, more geographic areas, and/or more categories of subjects. For instance, the weather tables present data for about 70 weather stations or cities in the Adobe Acrobat or book version while the Excel and Lotus files contain over 280 areas. The national income tables contain data back to the early 1950s. The PDF files are hyperlinked to the spreadsheets so that both can be displayed simultaneously.

5.0 out of 5 stars the gold standard, January 24, 2001
By
This review is from: Statistical Abstract of the United States : The National Data Book 1999 (CD-ROM)
The Statistical Abstract is the gold standard of reference books--far more statistics than the World Almanac or its private competitors, in about the same number of pages. Only in the Statistical Abstract can you learn things like: the budgets of individual states, crime rates of individual cities, and economic data about foreign companies. How does the Census Bureau do it? They cut out the drivel about celebrities' birth dates, the Year in Review, etc. -- and pass the savings on to you in the form of additional hard data! If you are the sort of person who likes to have a reference book by his or her bedside (and if you aren't, you probably aren't reading this anyhow) then buy the Statistical Abstract.
