Emphasizes the conceptual basis for statistical analysis using realistic problems to introduce the various statistics discussed. This text emphasizes contemporary research problems to better illustrate the relevance of statistical analysis in scientific research. All statistical methods are introduced in the context of a realistic problem, many of which are from contemporary published research. These studies are fully referenced so students can easily access the original research. The uses of statistics are then developed and presented in a conceptually logical progression for increased comprehension.

This book is an introduction to statistics for the behavioral sciences in which emphasis is placed on developing and explaining statistics in the context of actual research problems. While at Framingham, Hal developed and taught courses in research methodology and statistical analysis, as well as the historical foundations of psychology. His first textbook, Psychological Research Methods: A Conceptual Approach, coauthored with Dr. Douglas W. Bloomquist (Allyn & Bacon, 1985) focused on integrating statistics and research methodology. Hal authored three editions of Statistical Concepts for the Behavioral Sciences before joining with Dr. Bonnie Green as coauthor for the current fourth edition. Fascinated with how humans learn and remember, Bonnie began her academic career with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Penn State in 1986. After teaching elementary school science and math for several years, she returned to graduate school to obtain a M.S. in Experimental Psychology in 1998 and a Ph.D. in 2002 from Lehigh University. Bonnie Green spent a year at Cedar Crest College teaching behavioral statistics and research methods before joining the faculty at ESU in 2003 where she has been teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in behavioral statistics, research methods, and psychometrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good explanatory book, February 28, 2003
This review is from: Statistical Concepts for the Behavioral Sciences (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
I used this book for my psychological statistics course last semester. Although I have had teachers in the past who explained things more adequately, this book did a really good job explaining things for the most part. I almost always use examples to learn how to apply knowledge, as working through a problem step by step seems to be the best teacher to me. Fortunately, this book has a lot of examples. And, as a bonus, these examples apply towards the social sciences so you can see how everything fits in with a topic you're actually interested in (let's face it, few are interested in math).

I had already taken a statistics course in high school, so my stats class last year was pretty much a review for me. However, I wound up actually learning more than I planned to because of this book.

Overall, I recommend the book for anybody learning statistics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Statistics Text!, November 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text was required for my introduction to statistics course for my Ph.D. program. Although I had taken a few statistics courses during my Master's program, I learned so much in this class as a result of reading and practicing example problems provided by this book. The authors do a great job of explaining important concepts and showing the mathematical computations that occur when you simply type a command into a statistical program. This text starts from the very beginning (assumes you know little) and is incredibly user friendly as it builds up to more advanced methods and approaches. I would recommend using this text along with "A Gentle Introduction to STATA." The two work well together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to work with Textbooksrus, February 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book was described as used-very good and it's true. It looks almost like new and arrived in a timely manner, before my classes began. I have ordered other books with Textbooksrus and have yet to be disappointed. Thanks
