"C. R. Rao would be found in almost any statistician's list of five outstanding workers in the world of Mathematical Statistics today. His book represents a comprehensive account of the main body of results that comprise modern statistical theory."
-W. G. Cochran

"[C. R. Rao is] one of the pioneers who laid the foundations of statistics which grew from ad hoc origins into a firmly grounded mathematical science."
-B. Efrom

Translated into six major languages of the world, C. R. Rao's Linear Statistical Inference and Its Applications is one of the foremost works in statistical inference in the literature. Incorporating the important developments in the subject that have taken place in the last three decades, this paperback reprint of his classic work on statistical inference remains highly applicable to statistical analysis. Presenting the theory and techniques of statistical inference in a logically integrated and practical form, it covers:
* The algebra of vectors and matrices
* Probability theory, tools, and techniques
* Continuous probability models
* The theory of least squares and the analysis of variance
* Criteria and methods of estimation
* Large sample theory and methods
* The theory of statistical inference
* Multivariate normal distribution

Written for the student and professional with a basic knowledge of statistics, this practical paperback edition gives this industry standard new life as a key resource for practicing statisticians and statisticians-in-training.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a classic by a maestro, July 26, 2000

This book contains an encyclopaedic wealth of material on the mathematical theory of Statistics upto the beginning of the 70's, packed in its 600-odd pages. It contains material for several courses in Statistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. In Chapter 1 it captures in a few pages the essence of matrix theory required for Statistics. The material on Linear Models and Least Squares in Chapter 4 is excellent. Chapter 8 captures succinctly in a few pages the entire theory of the multivariate normal and sampling distributions thereof using the characterisation arising from the Cramer--Wold Theorem. The other chapters too contain a phenomenal amount of material in a wide sweep of the theory of Statistics. However, it is not suitable as a text-book since the writing is terse; an instructor who already knows the subject will benefit from the book to prepare his material; students will find it difficult to read it on their own. Further, the proof-reading is somewhat shoddy and there are many typographical errors. Then it has some idiosyncracies like presenting the author's list of publications, impressive though it is. If you are a working statistician or a researcher or a teacher of Statistics, you have to have a copy of it on your desk within easy reach!
