Editorial Reviews

Review

The exercises are well thought through...the book would be useful even for less mathematically orientated users of statistical methods, as it presents important ideas not often found in a textbook. -- Statistical Methods in Medical Research It would make an excellent text for a masters level inference course that aimed to cover classical and Bayesian inference. -- Biometrics --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book gives a good introduction to bayesian statistics, especially the relation between bayesian and frequentistic statistics is well explained. Together with "The Bayesian Choice" and "Data Analysis - A Bayesian Tutorial" it covers my initial need for knowledge about Bayesian statistics.

I found the explanations of the concepts very helpful. I am on a post-graduate MSc course, and all the fundamental concepts are covered well. There is a smooth transition from frequentist to Bayes. Some of the larger core texts contain additional complexities, and this book steers well clear, focussing on the core topics with well-thought examples. One criticism I have is that the answers to all questions, rather than a select number, would be helpful. Perhaps a website detailing these could be made??

The book by the great professors Helio Migon and Dani Gamerman provides an advanced course in Statistical Inference for students that have a higher background in Statistics, especially for those in a PhD course. It is very concise, nevertheless very comprehensive. I strongly recommend.

The first edition (10 years ago) was a nice intro to Bayesian vs. frequentist stats - the second edition should never have been published - there are so many good books out there now that include R code to show you how Bayesian and frequentist statistics differ - this book - and almost all like it - are anachronisms - would you buy a calculus book that made no reference to Mathematica or MatLab? Of course not. Statistics is now about computation and simulation - buy a good book that covers the whole subject.
