A marvellous text!,
By Alfred Hanssen (University of Tromsų, Norway) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Statistical Signal Processing (Paperback)
I have used the text by Scharf for a graduate level course in detection and estimation theory a large number of times now, and I am really pleased with the book. Scharf's text has its main strength in the consistent use of linear algebra and matrix theory. As a result, the author is able to provide the reader with beautiful and insightful geometrical explanations of most key concepts relating to detection and estimation. The geometrical view is unique to this text, and I have found that the students benefit a lot from the geometrical framework when trying to understand advanced topics. Scharf's book is not necessarily easy to read, but once the necessary time and effort has been invested, the result is advanced knowledge and insight of a permanent value. The book contains very few errors, and it contains a sufficient number of relevant problems.

A must have text for signal processing researchers,
By Sonny (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Statistical Signal Processing (Paperback)
This is one of the best texts in Statistical Signal Processing. The coverage of this text is deep and guidelines to developing ideas are available. It may be more difficult to read than S.Kay's similar texts, however it's worth having one with you.

A really comprehensive book,
This review is from: Statistical Signal Processing (Paperback)
An extremely comprehensive book for those who are taking a course on estimation and detection theory. A basic knowledge of some topics in signal processing helps in a much better understanding of the topics covered in the book.

A good book, but a bit difficult to read.,

This book is very comprehensive, covering all essential topics in signal detection, all down to the bottom. However, it requires a very high level of mathematical maturity and understanding as all derivations are pretty jumpy with slight notational abuses.
