several wrong book answers,

This book is great at explaining statistics to the newcomer. However, the book answers were provided as part of our on-line classroom exercises and practices, and many of them are wrong. I found myself trying to force my answers to conform with the answers provided by the book! Then had to email the professor to check my answers against the book's - most of the time I was right and the book answers were wrong! Someone wasn't checking - a shame, because the book itself is a wonderful resource. A very frustrating experience.

This book was for a stats class online and it was very helpful for someone who is not math or stat savy!

Maybe if you are a Math Professor,
This review is from: Statistics Alive! (Paperback)
I have had the misfortune of having my school update our graduate stats syllabus and this is the book they chose. I hope they got an amazing bulk deal for the bookstore because they obviously didn't choose it based on merit. I don't recommend this book in anyway. MANY of the practice problems give incorrect answers in the back of the book. The explanations of stats concepts and theories assume that you have knowledge that you don't have yet. I took undergrad stats 15 years ago and remember just enough to know that the explanations don't cover what I need to know (and confuse me). If you have math anxiety rest assured this book will throw you over the edge. I had to buy another stats book just to get through my course. I recommend Statistics: A Tool for Social Research There is no way I would have gotten through the course without it.

Great information that was quite helpful when I needed it the most. I had an SPSS class based on Statistics coding so this book really helped me learn what I needed to know so I could use it along with the book that came with my program. I was very pleased in the end. Fast delivery and will purchase from seller again.

Where are the answers?,

The book is great for beginners - easy to read and understand. The flaw? No answers for the extensive amount of practice problems. Clearly, if I were math inclined I wouldn't need this remedial sort of book. It would be helpful to check my answers instead of accepting my possible wrong answers and continuing through the book. The workbook (is purchased separately) has answers only to the odd problems which is a pet peeve of mine-especially when the questions include "short answer" items on divergent topics. I understand this is to make sure that the work is being done without peeking, but wouldn't an in-class test identify peekers while the rest of us could be sure we are on the right track?

I had this book for my statistics class and I thought the vocabulary definitions were very good and the exercises are straight forward. The workbook that accompanies this book - do not consider it an optional, get it. The workbook clarifies what is lacking in a great deal of the reading. Sometimes I found myself reading the explanations three times through to make sure I had full understanding.

Statistics Half Dead,

This review is from: Statistics Alive! (Paperback)
The worst textbook experience I've ever had. Answers to the odd practice questions are in the back of the book, and are wrong as often as not. The practice problems are ridiculously long -- one can learn how to work a formula just as well with 10 scores as with 50; at any rate, anyone calculating statistics for a sample that large and not using a computer should be charged with negligence, or perhaps just stupidity. The examples are poorly thought out -- one example used towns whose speeding drivers apparently drove -22 miles over the speed limit. If I didn't need some examples with correct answers to check my own, I wouldn't need the book. The Work Guide purchased separately also has wrong answers, though not as many. However, it does not follow the textbook in some instances, such as the rounding procedure for '5'. I would have much preferred the author of the textbook use less time trying to be a 'by my side' teacher and interspersing humor in too many places, and more time checking the content of the book. The conversational style that attempts to persuade that statistics is easily learned fails big time when it MUST be pretty dog-goned hard, since the teacher author has wrong answers.
