Book Description

0131562789 978-0131562783 March 31, 2007 4

For one-quarter/semester courses that focus on the basics or combine statistics with research methods.

By using definitional formulas to emphasize the concepts of statistics, rather than rote memorization, students work problems in a way that keeps them constantly aware of the underlying logic of what they are doing.

Here, in the fourth edition of Statistics for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, the authors have refined their text by building off an already well-established approach - emphasizing the intuitive, deemphasizing the mathematical, and explaining everything in direct, simple language - but also going beyond these principles to both further student understanding and stimulate the long-suffering community of statistics instructors. By using definitional formulas to emphasize the concepts of statistics, rather than rote memorization, students work problems in a way that keeps them constantly aware of the underlying logic of what they are doing.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Because today statistics are done by computer, not by hand, and the majority of social science majors are human- and word-oriented, not math and number oriented, this text offers a different approach to teaching statistics. Focusing on understanding, it emphasizes the intuitive, de-emphasizes the mathematical, explains everything in clear, simple language, and requires students to put what they know into words rather than to recite formulas. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Because today's statistics are done by computer, not by hand, and the majority of individuals in the social sciences are human- and word-oriented, not math and number oriented, this book offers a different approach to teaching statistics. Focusing on understanding, it emphasizes the intuitive, de-emphasizes the mathematical, and explains everything in clear, simple language. The book uses definitional formulas and encourages readers put words to what they know by writing essays rather than reciting formulas. The volume offers a comprehensive overview of key statistical concepts including the mean, variance, standard deviation, and z scores, correlation and prediction, key ingredients for inferential statistics: the normal curve, probability, and population versus sample and introduction to hypothesis testing, decision error, statistical power, and effect size, an introduction to the t test, analysis of variance, chi-square and strategies when population distributions are not normal and making sense of advanced statistical procedures in research articles. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chapter 7 and beyond require serious dedication., April 11, 2011

I'd like to say that first off, I can't stand that the majority of the reviews here are about the delivery of this POS textbook. This is not Ebay!

What is inside the book is what counts and this book for me is an absolute nightmare. I have never taken a statistics class before and being an online student with no time and no access to tutors is an absolute disaster. This book is of no use to a person who is not previously familiar to statistics. It provides no effective examples of the problems for a person to effectively reverse engineer. If you have this book for an online class, you should seek a different means to learn statistics. This book was written with an assumption that you will retain 92% of what you read every week. I'm paying about $1100 for this class and I want a refund for the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars They do their best to make it accessible, February 8, 2011

If nothing else, this book recognizes that those who are in the social sciences may have had difficult experiences with statistics in the past that focused purely on the formulas. This book can't make stats 'easy', but it does its best to make it understandable - breaking down the reasoning behind each formulaic move so that you can truly understand the meaning behind the numbers. If you have an option of taking a stats class with this book as opposed to a straight stats for beginners, I'd recommend this one any day.

4.0 out of 5 stars a textbook, September 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I got this book because it was required for my class. I know statistics well, but I'm not particularly math-savvy. Anyway, if it's required, get it, but it's not exactly a fun read, and it can be rather confusing if you don't already know what they are talking about.
