From the Publisher

A straightforward book that integrates the traditional foundations of statistical inference with the more modern ideas of data analysis. Divided into three sections, it begins with a description of data in general and groups of numbers in particular. Part two develops concepts of randomness, probability and statistical inference. Lastly, it applies these ideas to more complex data structures and the analysis of relationships. This edition contains more problems, exercises and updated examples. Computer output is systematically included throughout the text. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for seeing behind formulas.., December 20, 2005
First beware: this book is introductory and is targeted towards those whose background does not cover a fair amount of calculus. Therefore if you are comfortable with calculus and following a bunch of formulas and assumptions expressed in math, and that is exactly what you want to do, go for other statistics books crafted towards engineers.

I am also an engineer and I wanted to get a grasp of the simple logic behind statistics and data analysis, and the narrative in this book presented an "easy reading". Although the formulas and methods might not help when reading some advanced books (I went on to reading simulation after this after reviewing another book crafted towards engineers), the insight remains and it gets easier to see the connections behind the formulas and various assumptions.
