Book Description

October 31, 2003 0787964581 978-0787964580 2
Statistics for Health Policy and Administration Using Microsoft Excel provides an introduction to the use of statistics in health policy and health administration-related fields. The book is keyed to the powerful statistical tool Microsoft Excel and shows how to prepare data and understand the data display capabilities of the program. It also offers the information needed to master probability— the foundation of statistical analysis. This important book is structured around illustrative examples that are demonstrated with Excel displays. The book is filled with step-by-step discussions of how statistical problems are solved using Excel, and it contains a wealth of exercises addressing the material covered in each section. Many of the book's exercises include the replication of examples so that the student has an immediate reference with which to compare his or her work and determine whether or not the procedure was carried out correctly. Additional exercises are provided for further practice to reinforce the valuable lessons learned

  • Includes information on the chi-square statistic and discusses its use for assessing data for which both the independent and dependent variables are categorical
  • Discusses the use of the t test for assessing data where the independent variable is a two-level categorical variable, while the dependent variable is a numerical variable
  • Includes analysis of variance, which provides an analytical tool for a multilevel categorical independent variable and a numerical dependent variable
  • Contains information on regression analysis, which deals with numerical variables both as the independent and the dependent variables
  • Introduces the use of Logit for numerical independent variables and dependent variables that are categorical and take on only two levels.

This comprehensive volume on statistics for health care administration and health policy offers students and professionals a much-needed resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful, December 7, 2005

This review is from: Statistics for Health Policy and Administration Using Microsoft Excel (Hardcover)
For people like me. Even if you have had no exposure to Excell before, by the end of the book, you will be able to complete difficult statistical analysis using the excell application. This include linear regression and matrix math. Dr. Veney uses real world health care examples to set up each task, and gives very good step by step instructions. In addition, the explainations given are written in basic english, and it often feels as if you are having a conversation with the author. Obviously statistics is still a difficult task for many, but this book does make it easier. I used it for class, and then found I actually pulled it out frequently during my work (in public health) to set up certain data and analyze them properly. My managers and bosses have always been surprised at my ability to compute- but really I am just using the set ups in this book.
