5.0 out of 5 stars First-class piece of work.
From a reviewer: I teach mathematics/statistics in the Education dept at Liverpool John Moores University, England. I have been asked by the publication 'Teaching Statistics' to review your recent book on Statistics with Excel.

I would like to congratulate you on this first class piece of work. I have felt for some time that the profession is too hung up with...

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy only if you already know statistics
I had hoped this book would explain the statistical techniques themselves before jumping into how to use Excel, which is all it really does. If you already know statistics (which I did not) and don't know Excel (which I did) this will help. If the reverse is true, keep looking.

I would like to congratulate you on this first class piece of work. I have felt for some time that the profession is too hung up with the usefulness of dedicated stats packages. Too often I believe, statistics departments believe that the costlier the package, then the better it is. Untrue!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped it would be., January 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Statistics with Microsoft Excel (Spiral-bound)
I read this book, hoping to recommend it to my stat students. The exercises and examples were easy to follow, _but_ there was not enough explanation of the examples that were given.

For example, rather than just show how to do an analysis of probability, I wished for more of the "nuts and bolts" of the analysis.

I was disappointed. Even though the price of this book is relatively low, I would not recommend this to beginning students of statistics. The front section on using Excel seemed OK, but I didn't pay attention to it, as it was not needed for my classes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful if you want to do your statistics on Excel, May 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Microsoft does a very poor job of documenting its popular Excel statistical functions. Even if you peruse through the Microsoft's website, the explanations, particularly of the meaning of the Excel's Data Analysis output, are sorely lacking.

This book fills that void. It covers the following topics and covers both the input and the output of Excel's statistics functions and statistics Data Analysis package.

1)Descriptive statistics
2)Probability Distributions (Binomial, Poisson, Hypergeometric)
3)Testing hypothesis (both Z and t tests)
6)ANOVA (F-Test, single factor, two factors). It also goes into useful detail on which ANOVA Excel Data Analysis to use.
7)Correlation
8)Regression (not covered in strong detail but that would be outside the scope of this book).

Again, the book does a good job of explaining the output of the Excel's Data Analysis which can be confounding. I think that alone might be worth the price of this book for many. It also provides good explanations on which Excel statistical functions and tools to use in which type of data sets.

This book does not contain any practice problems but only limited examples. If you already have good understanding of statistics and would like to know how you can utilize Excel to crunch data using your statistical knowledge, then this book should help you a great deal.

I do not recommend this book for those who are trying to learn statistics as it does not delve much at all into statistical concepts. This is mostly a "how to" book on Excel statistics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeping it Simple, August 10, 2005
The layout of the book is simple, straightforward, and easy to follow. The editors included lots of "white space" which a book of this nature requires ... it keeps you from feeling overwhelmed. The interactive nature of the exercises and the explanations and diagrams are nicely organized. The book itself is very light and easy to carry around. Overall, I found it to be very accessible, and I would recommend it to others as a great resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars clear, concise, November 5, 2011

As others have said, this book is not intended to teach statistics. It is meant as a guide for using excel to do statistical calculations. I have found it to be clearly written and easy to follow for that purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference for using the statistics functions in Excel, March 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Assuming that you have some grounding in statistical theory, this book is an excellent resource in how to maximize Excel's statistical analysis capabilities. The book outlines how to organize your data sets and queries to generate your desired statistical data for analysis. Using Excel this book will show you how to generate general descriptive statistics, probability distributions, t-test, f-test, ANOVAs, correlations and regressions. This is a solid book for someone looking for an introduction in how to use Excel's data analysis toolpak.
