This book brings to life the compelling underlying logic of statistical methods so that readers can not only do the computations, but also truly understand what they are doing and remember what they have learned for years to come. This book covers the basic introductory statistics and methods including central tendency and variability, inferential statistics (Z scores, the normal curve, sample versus population, and probability), the t test, the analysis of variance, correlation, prediction, and more. For research analysts and reporters in the field of psychology.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Class-tested and developed over two decades, the material for this innovative text reflects recent changes in both research practice and in the teaching of statistics for psychology: 1) Statistics are done by computer, not by hand, so the text stresses deep understanding, not brief explanation followed by the usual plugging numbers into formulas. 2) The majority of psychology majors are human-and word-oriented, not math-oriented, so this text employs their way of learning--for example, requiring them to put what they learn into words lay persons can understand. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

A book that focuses on the logic behind the concepts of statistics for psychology, using definitional formulas rather than emphasizing rote memorization. Clearly written, each procedure is conveyed both numerically and verbally, with many visual examples to illustrate the text. It takes the reader from basic procedures through analysis of variance (ANOVA), and not only teaches statistics, but also prepares the user to read and understand research articles as well. This book is an introduction to statistics for psychology, covering such topics as order in a group of numbers; mean, variance, standard deviation, and Z scores; correlation; prediction; the normal curve, probability, and population versus sample; hypothesis testing; the t test; analysis of variance; chi-square tests; the general linear model; and making sense of advanced statistical procedures in research articles. For statisticians, psychologists and those involved in psychological research in the behavioral and social sciences. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for the non-statistically minded, March 20, 1999
By A Customer
I found this book greatly supportive to a non-statistically minded person such as myself. The authors realise that not everyone feels comfortable with doing statistics and, indeed, actually dread it. Since I need to do a Statistics for Psychology course to continue in Psychology it has been a relief that the main text used has been written to aid the statistically impaired. It is fulled with many mind-easing comments etc. and, with the combination of this book and my lecturer at the University of Canterbury, I am actually learning to enjoy something I never thought I would enjoy. A big thank you to Arthur and Elaine Aron. You have helped me continue my studies in the field I wish to remain in - Psychology.

2.0 out of 5 stars Inexcusable!, May 31, 2005
By
I've never come across a textbook with so many mathematical and typographical errors! It was absolutely infuriating! We could never trust what the book gave as a solution to an exercise.

If the authors would fix these errors it would be a decent text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for undergrads and grad students alike, March 28, 2005
I was amazed w/how clearly this book explained concepts (as compared with other books/professors). The book also explains the concepts in different ways/perspectives, so that if you don't understand one explanation you're likely to understand the others. The book also has a perfect range of material--complete coverage of Z-scores, t-tests, regression, and ANOVAs; all the way thru concepts like MANOVA/MANCOVA, and multiple regression. Also at the end includes a couple great chapters which give very simple explanations of more complex procedures such as structural equation modeling, causal modeling, factor analysis, etc. By far the best stats book I've read.
