Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Class-tested and developed over two decades, the material for this innovative text reflects recent changes in both research practice and in the teaching of statistics for psychology: 1) Statistics are done by computer, not by hand, so the text stresses deep understanding, not brief explanation followed by the usual plugging numbers into formulas. 2) The majority of psychology majors are human-and word-oriented, not math-oriented, so this text employs their way of learning--for example, requiring them to put what they learn into words lay persons can understand. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

A book that focuses on the logic behind the concepts of statistics for psychology, using definitional formulas rather than emphasizing rote memorization. Clearly written, each procedure is conveyed both numerically and verbally, with many visual examples to illustrate the text. It takes the reader from basic procedures through analysis of variance (ANOVA), and not only teaches statistics, but also prepares the user to read and understand research articles as well. This book is an introduction to statistics for psychology, covering such topics as order in a group of numbers; mean, variance, standard deviation, and Z scores; correlation; prediction; the normal curve, probability, and population versus sample; hypothesis testing; the t test; analysis of variance; chi-square tests; the general linear model; and making sense of advanced statistical procedures in research articles. For statisticians, psychologists and those involved in psychological research in the behavioral and social sciences.

I found this book greatly supportive to a non-statistically minded person such as myself. The authors realise that not everyone feels comfortable with doing statistics and, indeed, actually dread it. Since I need to do a Statistics for Psychology course to continue in Psychology it has been a relief that the main text used has been written to aid the statistically impaired. It is fulled with many mind-easing comments etc. and, with the combination of this book and my lecturer at the University of Canterbury, I am actually learning to enjoy something I never thought I would enjoy. A big thank you to Arthur and Elaine Aron. You have helped me continue my studies in the field I wish to remain in - Psychology.

I used Edition 2 of this book during my undergraduate education and, at the time, it seemed fine. I am in a graduate program and we are using the 6th edition and it is SO MUCH BETTER! I have compared them side-by-side and the improvement has been remarkable. Not that I have no complaints, mind you, but it's a solid book for psychology statistics.

I've never come across a textbook with so many mathematical and typographical errors! It was absolutely infuriating! We could never trust what the book gave as a solution to an exercise.

If the authors would fix these errors it would be a decent text.

I was amazed w/how clearly this book explained concepts (as compared with other books/professors). The book also explains the concepts in different ways/perspectives, so that if you don't understand one explanation you're likely to understand the others. The book also has a perfect range of material--complete coverage of Z-scores, t-tests, regression, and ANOVAs; all the way thru concepts like MANOVA/MANCOVA, and multiple regression. Also at the end includes a couple great chapters which give very simple explanations of more complex procedures such as structural equation modeling, causal modeling, factor analysis, etc. By far the best stats book I've read.

This statistics book got me through the muddiness that was my Statistics lectures. When you can't understand the words coming out of your professor's mouth, dive into this book for clarification. It's strategic, using efficient stages to set up your knowledge base for the next piece of statistical information. I'd never taken a statistics class before, and I can't claim to be brilliant at math, but this book helped me pass my class with an "A". (So did my TA tutor, god bless him.)
