Written in plain English, without unnecessary mathematics, technical jargon, or computational busywork, Robert and John Witte's Eighth Edition of Statistics clearly explains the basic concepts and procedures of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The text helps students gain the confidence and conceptual understanding they need to tackle such perennially mystifying topics as the standard deviation, variance interpretation of the correlation coefficient, hypothesis tests, degrees of freedom, p-values, and estimates of effect size.
Now revised, this Eighth Edition presents a reduced number of chapters to better accommodate one-semester and one-quarter classes. The new edition also features a new emphasis on expressions involving sums of squares and degrees of freedom, a stronger stress on the importance of variability, an expanded treatment of estimates of effect size, more material on inferential statistics, revised treatment of degrees of freedom, and updated examples.

Bad edition of a useful book...,
By
This review is from: Statistics (Hardcover)
If you are an instructor avoid this book. I have used older editions of this book because they have been easy for students to understand. With the eighth edition I have had to pass out lists of corrections and mistakes in the book. They are nothing major, but often confuse students.

This review is from: Statistics (Textbook Binding)
The chapters are very easy to read and understand. Each chapter includes exercises to do after each new concept is explained. Most answers to the exercises are included in the back of the book. The step-by-step instructions make concepts and exercises user friendly. A great Stats book.

This review is from: Statistics (Hardcover)
This textbook was selected for me to use in teaching statistics to undergraduates. I've just finished reading it and I am, on the whole, very pleased. It is much easier to understand than any of the statistics texts I used in upper division courses or graduate school. It is straight forward and concise yet has a fairly conversational style. The only downside is the need for text corrections (about ½ a page worth) but these are available from the book's companion website and can be handed out the first day of class to avoid student frustration.
