Interpreting statistical information and carrying out statistical procedures is an integral part of veterinary and animal science. This successful textbook, now in its second edition and with an accompanying CD, provides the reader with the necessary information to handle numerical data and critically appraise the statistical methodology in the literature in the fields of veterinary and animal science. Written in a non-mathematical way with an emphasis on assimilating underlying concepts and correctly interpreting computer output, it contains numerous worked real examples to help the reader develop an understanding of the procedures.

Revised and updated throughout, this new edition of Statistics for Veterinary and Animal Science

* is now accompanied by a CD containing the datasets used in the examples so that the user can work through the procedures;

* assumes no prior knowledge of statistics;

* features learning objectives and exercises in every chapter to evaluate progress in understanding;

* includes helpful flowcharts to provide a guide to the correct analysis of data;

* contains glossaries of notation and terminology which act as ready reference;

* indicates the more advanced sections that can be skipped initially without loss of continuity;

* includes a new chapter in which the fundamental importance of statistics to the practice of evidence-based veterinary medicine is clearly demonstrated and explained;

* incorporates new material on regression methods such as Poisson regression, regression models for clustered data, Cox proportional hazards regression models for survival data and generalized linear models.

Specifically written for veterinary science and animal science students, researchers and practitioners for whom no other suitable text exists.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The authors have succeeded admirably in the objective to provide an introductory statistics text, including basic concepts appropriate for "the complete novice in statistics".

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally stats for my tiny brain..., January 12, 2001

First stats book that I have read that gives me what I need in minutes. It also explains the concepts and functions that I use everyday in a manner understandable for most earthlings.

Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Makes Stats Not Suck, but Not Quite, July 11, 2009

This review is from: Statistics for Veterinary and Animal Science, Second Edition (Paperback)
I am a graduate student/veterinary resident taking a statistics course. This book is not required for my class, but "recommended," meaning that the instructor more or less follows this book for our lectures.

Having never had any type of stats class at all, I was pretty concerned about this class. In some ways, I still am, but this book is helping. It is pretty easy to read, and, most of the time, with each new concept introduced, there is an example to follow in the text. There are also questions to test yourself at the end of each chapter. The answers to these questions are in the back with decent explanations so if you get stuck, you can take a peek and "work backwards."

Overall, a good book especially for its target audience. Most examples are animal related. FYI...stats is still not cool. :)
