Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-Standard surveys of two important icons of the U.S. In each book, a large, color photograph on the left faces a short, simple text on the right. The writing is clear and concise. White House addresses nine topics, including what it is, who lives there, the 1814 fire, and special rooms including the president's office. Liberty discusses who made the statue; why and how it was constructed; and its location, symbolism, and repair work. There are many other titles on these topics that offer more creative approaches, including Cheryl Harness's Ghosts of the White House (S & S, 1998) and Betsy Maestro's The Story of the Statue of Liberty (Lothrop, 1986). However, for standard research, Gray's and Rau's books will be useful for libraries that don't own "True Book" (Children's) or other similar series entries.

Review

These simple, educational narratives, suitable for reading aloud, are saved from being completely utilitarian by their colorful illustrations. There are no fact boxes, sidebars, or captions to distract early readers. The paintings are done in bright colors with an unusual but successful mix of realistic and folk-art styles. -- School Library Journal, August 1, 2008 --This text refers to an alternate Library Binding edition.
