4.0 out of 5 stars Lo-Fi Snoop Doggie Dogg? Ya gotta get it!, January 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Statutory Grape (Audio CD)
Musically, very similar to the first Rentals album. Vocally, very cute girl punk(ish) stuff. Lyrically, hillarious. Overall, wonderful when you just don't know what else to put on. This is the musical epitome of Los Angeles for those who get the joke. Though the lyrics are very funny, them music is very well written and (kind of well) performed. But the capper is "Gin and Juice." You don't get much funnier than that. Not to mention "Pear Shaped Girl" and the ever poigniant and truthful "Punk Fries." Buy it! Make them make another album!

4.0 out of 5 stars An unknown gem... though it's not for everyone, March 6, 2010
This review is from: Statutory Grape (Audio CD)
This album is SILLY, overly-playful, and even cloying at times... yet really brilliant in its own way. The music can be odd and discordant, but somehow it just works for me. A lot of the songs are SO out-of-left field with their lyrics ("Magic Bunny" for one), that I can't help but smile when I listen. And personally I think that if music is making you smile, it's doing something right.

Then there's oddly touching songs like "Trailer Song", which is about someone longing for a double-wide trailer (for extra space) as a place to call home... and though it may be meant as a tongue-in-cheek shot at that mentality (I really couldn't say), I find the melancholy almost washboard-sounding music to be strangely touching. I just downloaded another album by this band and I'm excited to listen, and I actually wish I could see them play live. Yeah, that's how much I dig this.

The music here is not for everyone, but if you like music that doesn't take itself too seriously, and you can deal with screeching horns that seem to come wailing out of nowhere, this album may certainly be worth a listen. I keep going back to it, and every time a song from this album comes up on my mp3 player's shuffle... I turn it up and smile.

All that being said, I just really want to know who Chris Howard is and why he won't give back their bowling balls. I mean, c'mon Chris... they're NOT your balls.

4.0 out of 5 stars light, bouncy music, May 18, 2008
This review is from: Statutory Grape (Audio CD)
I heard much of this album at Spaceland in 1996. Light, bouncy music. The girls in the band were also very nice to look at. They certainly attracted a lot of blokes in the audience.

The blending of the instruments and vocals was well done and very balanced. The vocals come thru clearly.

Unfortunately, the band broke up around 2001. They seemed so promising. :(

If you're looking for a CD that you can listen to with friends and be able to stop everything to say "What did she just say?" thus spawning a new phrase that will reverberate through you circle's vocabulary, this is the disk.

And just to hear their cover of Snoop Doggy Dog's Gin and Juice is worth the price of the whole disk. Pick it up.
