SUB POP liked this album from DEATH VESSEL so much they have already signed up Death Vessel for the U.S. for their next album. Laura and Meg Baird of ESPERS sing on the album. Death Vessel will also be supporting LOW on their April/May 2007 European Tour. Death Vessel is the name of JOEL THIBODEAU's new work as both a solo artist and band leader. Thibodeau's vocal delivery is astonishing. Perhaps his vocal style could be best described as descendent from "the high lonesome sound" - unleashed upon the world by Appalachian / Bluegrass pioneer ROSCOE HOLCOMB in the early 1960's.

That's it. Right on. Album of the year. At least MY album of the year. Released in 2004, and I'm still playing it weekly. Sea shanty inspired folk numbers mask themselves, move along, mutating into a combo with bluegrass. Evoking the feel of Sandy Denny & Nick Drake, as the same voice. For fans of the twang of classic country, the darker side of folk, and the clean bluegrass sound. A beautiful album.

After seeing Joel perform live at the local bowling alley a few years ago, I was in love. His haunting non-falsetto resonates days after seeing him perform live. He's since moved on to open for the likes of the Books and the legendary Os Mutantes at much larger venues... but his delicate songwriting and sweet heart-wrenching voice haven't changed. This album is a classic.
