Biography

Biography by William Ruhlmann

Nickolas Ashford (b. May 4, 1942, Fairfield, SC) and Valerie Simpson (b. Aug 26, 1946, New York City) have two careers, as songwriters and as performers, with the former seemingly more important than the latter until the mid-'80s. The two met in 1964 and scored their first songwriting hit in 1966 with Ray Charles' recording of their "Let's Go Get Stoned." After a… Read more in Amazon's Ashford & Simpson Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Dance Forever with this One, September 13, 2000
By
Ristobee (South of LAX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stay Free (Audio CD)
It's difficult to choose which of Ashford and Simpson's albums is my favorite - but this one has two of my all time favorite songs from A&S, "Nobody Knows" (pounding rythm, lush arrangement) and "Finally Got to Me" (fun, upbeat lyrics and instrumentals). The dance hit "Found A Cure" is here in all it's glory, and the beat continues through "Stay Free" (great lyrics) and "Dance Forever". The two ballads "Follow Your Heart" (excellent vocals) and "Crazy" (delightful arrangement) are thouroughly enjoyable. I played the album repeatedly when it was first released and am very happy to have this collection sounding even better on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, Stuart, October 10, 2005
This review is from: Stay Free (Audio CD)
I bought this album in Chicago from a cut-out bin at Rose Records in 1983, already owning the 45 for "Found a Cure." That was one of the greatest purchases I ever made. I simple played this album to death, driving my college roommate absolutely bananas (sorry, Stuart). "Stay Free" is one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs in my vast collection, and reminds me so much of a college colleague who later died in a tragic accident. "Nobody Knows" also has memories of growing up in a farm town trying to pull in urban radio stations and catching this incredible song one day in 1979. The extended version of "Found a Cure" is incredible, STILL often running through my head so, so many years later. After starting with this one, I own all Ashford & Simpson. Please don't miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album should be retitled "Forever Memories", May 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Stay Free (Audio CD)
I am an avid fan of Ashford & Simpson. I rated this album 5 stars, because it brought back some very fond memories especially back in the day in 1979. I met my first real love when I was listening to this one particular cut "Crazy" and everytime I hear that song, I sit back and privately reminisce about that "special one". We had the most beautiful relationship and "Crazy" was our private song we danced to. I think that every Ashford & Simpson fan should have this album in their collection, because their collection is INCOMPLETE without it!
