They've been holding back for too long...,

Jimmy Eat World blasts the very skin off the toast on this EP, more energy than futures I dare say, heading towards an enormity of what I would call "post Emo fast pop punk culture". Hope comes from inside and Jimmy Eat World has never in my right mind sold out to the money making conglomerates of the music world, they remain steadfast as they were when clarity hit the racks. I love this EP; automatically the years best for me, sadly it's an EP not an Album.
Disintegration Starts out slow paced and builds into this killer drumming resonating through the speakers as Jim Adkins spills his souls through words. No regrets here as the chorus hits, about the taste of a relationship through painful eyes as everything but the blood remains. Over A lyrical rhyme to every question you've ever had in a relationship, I just can't understand how they write about relationships and make it sound like its about everything you do in life. Love the whole works. You'll never be over this... Closer has an excellent killer power punk guitar solo towards the end...that leaves you deafening...lyrics have gotten more on the somber mood...but instrumentally a genius mix, Jim Adkins makes no fatal move here. This is Jimmy Eat World on fine print. Half Right An EMO powerhouse that rips right through your skin, starts off sounding like a Death Cab for Cutie tune, lyrically explicit mind you, awesome song. Drugs or Me - Styrofoam Mix Interesting, as a mix can get on any experimental level, a very different outlook of the band. P/s: An instructional dose of Jimmy Eat World, worth every penny spent.

its better after a breakup,
This review is from: Stay on My Side Tonight (Dig) (Audio CD)
i'm a huge fan of j.e.w., i'v followed them since the beginning, and i think they get better and better. i bought this ep immediately after its release, which happened to be a few days into a rough breakup. each song connected very well with the heartbreaking situation, and is very open to relate to other's as well. musically, i think it is profound. it is a much more tranquil j.e.w. record, but each note seems to carry its own dark emotion. i am moved with every listen.
i think the highlight of the ep is the song "closer". it begins with a mellow riff and a wonderfully catchy chorus, and then explodes in the middle with a swelling, emotional, power-pop-punk instrumental, and then ends on the same note as the beginning. it is truly beautiful. i recommend this ep very highly for any fans of "clarity" and "futures", and any newcomers to jimmy eat world

As Good as Futures,
This review is from: Stay on My Side Tonight (Dig) (Audio CD)
This EP is quite impressive. Disintegration is a long, lush, spacious song and is just as good, if not better than anything on their "Futures" LP. The "Drugs or Me" remix is startling, in that it is like nothing JEW has ever done before, but worth listening to again and again. This is an excellent purchase for any Jimmy fan.

4 absolutley awsome tunes... and the worst remix I've ever heard,
By
This review is from: Stay on My Side Tonight (Dig) (Audio CD)
Let me start off by saying that the 3 original songs and 1 cover tune here are absoluteley jaw droppingly amazing. This band never stops amazing me. The first 4 songs are a definate call back to a more indi sound, with layered intricate guitar parts and great lyrics. If they had ended it here, I'd give this short and sweet EP 5 stars, no questions.
As for that terrible styrofoam re-mix. Not only should the term "re-mix" never be in the same sentence as Jimmy Eat World, this is quite possibly the worst re-mix I've ever heard. I think it was put there as some sort of joke mind you...

Progressive Emo?,

This review is from: Stay on My Side Tonight (Dig) (Audio CD)
Ok, ok, they hate the emo tag. I'll stop with that. But when you consider the genre Jimmy Eat World are often lumped in with, they sure stick out like a sore thumb. Songwriting that is always heartfelt and top-notch, without being a bit corny, coupled with professional musicianship, these guys have always stood out from the pack. In 2004, they released the highly anticipated "Futures," which packed a whallop with huge choruses and hooky arrangements. To follow it up, or perhaps bridge the gap until their next album, this very small EP, "Stay On My Side Tonight," was released last fall and went by virtually unnoticed.
Too bad, as there is some excellent material here. Let's just forget the "Drugs Or Me" remix, as it is pointless and annoying. Jimmy Eat World and remixes just don't work together. "Disintegration" is a slow-burning, sprawling epic and deserves to be heard by everyone. "Half Right" truly belongs on "Futures" and "Over" is probably the most accessible here, but that's not saying much. The material here is not overly accessible in the slightest, which is quite a change for these guys. "Stay On My Side Tonight" presents the more challening side of Jimmy Eat World, and if you can handle that, then by all means, this EP is worth picking up. Just beware that it doesn't really fit in with their other material. Is this part of a sound the group will explore in the future? Or is it just aborted studio material? I'm kind of hoping the former is the case.

One of their best,

This band has yet to let me down. I'm very rarely into emo music, but this kind of steps outside of the genre. In fact, it's just really good slow, melodic rock, and this CD has some of the best slow, interesting songs. I've always been a bigger fan of their slower songs than up tempo pop songs. That's where they really define themselves. Futures was a great return to that style after Bleed American. If you like the slower songs on Futures and Clarity, you'll love this CD.

Not a masterpiece by any means, but still worth it if you're a JEW fan,

While many of the critiques listed have been overall very complimentary to this EP, I'm afraid I do not agree has whole heartedly as those who have taken the time to actually write a critique. So here is a little less biased critique.
Really how you receive this album will depend on your tastes to the evolving style of Jimmy Eat World. If you liked "Futures" this album is a nice extension (hence EP) to the album. While I agree that the overall pace of the songs is alot more tranquil in comparison to "Futures" and "Bleed American", I wouldn't take it as far to say that this is on any sort of equal plain to composition or execution to "Clarity" or "Static Prevails". This EP definitely made a move towards more a more mellow and subdued sound, but there's an element missing. Originality was lacking in this album. The lyrics were cliché, even some of the licks seemed to be stolen from some one hit wonder. (Listen to Over). The main reason that i bought this aside form the fact that I'm a Jimmy supporter, was because of the Parental Advisory - a first for JEW. One review suggeted that it was because of the Heatmiser Cover, "Half Right". I think there is alot more than just that. The lyric subject matter was alot more alcoholic and sexual innuendo oriented. Which I found, on a personal note, to be tasteless and without meaning. Not so much because of the subject matter but because of its execution. This, in my mind, brings up a whole other matter of censorship, I own full albums with swear words galore and there is not one Parental Advisory on it. Which brings in to my mind to question my mind to quesiton if this album really deserved the parental advisory warning. That's for the listener to decide. Overall, it's an interesting listen. (excluding of course the remix of "Drugs or Me" at the end. I believe that JEW can be remixed and sound good, but this was was ridiculously horrible.) It's definitely worth checking out if you're already a fan. If this is your first encounter with JEW, I'd recommend you give "Clarity" a listen first.

This is a great buy!,

One of the things I had always admired about Jimmy Eat World is their excellent
ability to get music to their fans. Whether it's in the form of an album, an EP, or random stuff online (most recently on iTunes) Jimmy has always made as much of their music as possible as easily accessible to their fans as possible. With this EP, JEW does another great job of combining some excellent together to make a more than worthwhile EP. The first song, on the EP, "Disintegration," is gorgeous. It's beautiful in the soft/melodic/Jimmy sense that songs such as "My Sundown," of "Table for Glasses" are. It's an excellent start to the EP, as well as just an overall excellent song that all Jimmy fans should listen to time and time again. The second song, "Over" rocks slightly more than the first track, but is still very mellow and heartfelt. This EP as a whole is softer than Jimmy's typical radio pop hits, but that's fine with me because that's a large reason I love Jimmy Eat World: their ability to uncompromisingly write great songs, whether they are "radio friendly" or not. The midpoint on the EP, "Closer" has one of the most beautiful breakdown sections I've ever heard towards the end. Just typical, full throttle, rockingly melodic JEW. The kind the real fans never get tired of. "Half Right" is another great track, although I don't believe there is necessarily anything exceptional about it. The remix of "Drugs or Me" is leagues better than the version contained within the Futures album. Then again though, I've always hated that song, so a remix wouldn't have to do much to make it better. This is a great EP that is well worth the money you should spend on it.

Jimmy Eat World has been probably my favourite band for years now, why they didn't think these tracks fit on "Futures" I don't know? Very good music, very happy with it, if you liked "Futures", and "Bleed American" you won't be let down with this disc, especially with the 3rd track "Closer", the sounds will melt your mind.

If you like Futures, you'll like the EP too...,

I was a fan of Bleed American, was really impressed by Futures, and was waiting for the EP. I was not diappointed. I immediately liked the song "Disintegration" and the Heatmiser cover "Half Right." It took me a couple of listens, but I grew into Closer and Over. (Closer is a bit better.) However, I wish they would have done something other than a remix of "Drugs or Me." It was one of the weaker songs on Futures, and it really doesn't get better with a remix. Most EPs are a waste of money; this one is not. Good times...neat.
