Editorial Reviews

A woman (Taylor Schilling) finds out she's pregnant and returns home when the expected father (Aidan Quinn) wants nothing to do with her. Set in an idyllic Irish village.

Aidan Quinn is tops!

Extremely slow and worse nothing really gets truly resolved at the end.

It was ok, get tired of watching non-committal drama...

I watch his performance on Elementary on CBS and am always gratified -- he's such a complete pro! He could "phone in" that role if he wanted to, but he's always ALWAYS tuned in and on the mark. Sign of a guy who takes his job and audience seriously. Regarding STAY, I loved it. It's quiet, as another viewer wrote, and sweeping of Ireland's landscape, does not give-away the entire story in the first 20 minutes, keeps us involved in this relationship of clear love between two peers of different generations. The sometimes-not-so-subtle prejudices of the Irish that remain even today make for the texture of this story. Really wonderful. No subtitles -- somewhat difficult w/Irish accents.

There are plot elements in these comments, so you are forewarned.
How do you feel about a fifty-something man who repeatedly dates and impregnates young women and then tells them he is no longer interested if their relationship includes a baby? Hey, and this same guy leaves his pregnant girlfriend (carrying a heavy backpack) on an isolated country road with nothing around for miles but gorgeous, totally unpopulated Irish scenery. He was supposed to be upset, but surely a fifty-four-year old man can muster up enough maturity to do better than this.
I'm wondering why, why, why would she ever considering returning to him. Maybe I'm too squeamish about controlling relationships, but the relationship between these two people creeped me out.
And, what's with the macabre birth scene in which they put a young woman giving birth into a bed with her mother's laid-out corpse? I have a feeling that this was a lame attempt at humor (but it's really hard to tell). I am wondering if the unusual and somewhat confounding elements in this movie are intentional, or the result of bad writing.
Sorry to all Aidan Quinn fans. I am one, and I wanted to love this movie but just couldn't.
Aidan Quinn gets 5 stars; the movie gets one star. Anyway, it's pretty nice getting to watch Mr. Quinn, still a hunk, splitting logs with a wood ax and drinking beer. Mmmm...

I'll start off by saying I like Aidan Quinn but this match up did not work for me, I thought the storyline dragged and I was not crazy about the way it ended. To bad because this movie could have been better if a few things had been moved around.

Taylor Schilling's star has risen. Her body of work is beginning to show her immense talent. Aidan Quinn helps to make this romance between them believable. I loved the quietness of this film. The cinematography is breathtaking and a reminder to visit Ireland soon. Taylor fearlessly digs into themes that require the human spirit to face challenge and adversity. Like Piper Chapman, Abbey must face the consequences of her past. If you are a fan of Taylor, it's a lovely film. Enjoy watching her star rise as I am sure she will be walking the red carpet soon enough.

This is a quiet film--one which is well-acted by Aidan Quinn (Dermot) and Taylor Shilling (Abbey). It focuses on a relationship between an older "professor" in his 50s and a younger lover who becomes pregnant. The professor, though he loves the younger lover, wants no children, and that sets up a basic conflict of choice. Abbey leaves Ireland to return home to Montreal to sort out her choices. Her father wants Abbey to continue the pregnancy as the "right choice." She finds and reads a diary written by her mother who had left the family in Abbey's early childhood, discovering that Abbey was not wanted by her mother. I have written that the film is a "quiet film," because it is a film that focuses on the discovery of personal values, which, in a real sense, are as important to many adult viewers as the "high-action films" are to other viewers. It is a story of significance to older viewers who understand a narrative that intertwines human lives.

For a movie that got little in the way of publicity, this film really touched me. The characters felt so genuine, which says as much about the writers as it does the actors.

I've only ever seen Taylor Schilling in OITNB, so it was fun to see her not doing jail time. And Aidan Quinn, well. I'm not sure if it was his eyes or the Irish accent, but he had me hook, line, and sinker.

This was a great story of two people who fell in love and are enjoying the easiness of their relationship until Abbey becomes pregnant. Dermot, half immature and half broken, doesn't deal well with the news, as he's never wanted to be a father. Motherhood was the last thing on Abbey's mind, too.

The rest of the film is spent with the characters separately trying to figure out what they want. Some say the ending is too ambiguous, but I think it's quite clear.

And the soundtrack is lovely!

Real. a lovely movie, beautiful soundtrack, stunning setting. movies not created in Hollywood do not seem to feel the need to outline, define, control and conclude their story in 2 hours flat. This movie lets life roll along (as it truly does) and lets us watch it unfold. This movie has characters that do not try to control each other but are true to their own feelings and needs throughout, taking their own time and space to experience whatever it is they need to experience. The movie lets you wonder at the end, just what their future does hold. the scenery is beautiful, the interactions are very real life. Aidan Quinn as always does a marvelous job. If you want a formulaic sit-com style 2hr of guaranteed entertainment, this movie is probably not for you. But if you want something more, I would definitely recommend it.
