Stay Young a must have for any INXS er!,

This review is from: Stay Young 1979-1982 (Audio CD)
At first I hesitated from buying this CD because of the $. Growing up listening to Shaboo, Swing, Listen like, and Kick I never heard their early stuff until now. This is a must have CD if you even kinda liked INXS. The first disc is the best with "Doctor" jumping right out of your speaker. The sound quality is superior with the digital remastering. This CD really lets you know the band and how they grew up thru the years. The booklet is great with all kinds of cool photos and articles of how they rocked the Aussie pubs and clubs. They had a really sharp early sound which I never knew they had until I listened to this disc. I have a ton of respect for these guys and love their music now more than I did growing up in the 80's. They were way ahead of their time and it is a sad story that Mr. Hutch is no longer with us. Go get this disc! 5 star all the way!! Love and Peace!

Comprehensive CD Set,

Just recently purchased this two disc set and I have found it to be a simply unsurpassed culmination of INXS' first recordings from Australia. It's a very insightful look into how the band grew and developed into the band they are today. This is a must have for true INXS fans, to get to know their roots.

I love INXS, but they've been way too stingy with their b-sides and unreleased material. Thankfully, they rectify this to the extreme with this album, at least for their early material.I had quiet and poorly recorded CD versions of INXS, Underneath the Colours, and INXSIVE for 15 years, so I've heard many of these songs before but not all, and they didn't sound anywhere near this good. Plus many of the new-to-me ones are classics! Scratch, Telephone, Reckless Ways, and covers of Pretzel Logic, Ms Shapiro and You Really Got Me are the standouts. Most of the rest are good as well, and only a few are too slow and drag a bit. The Gift-era re-recordings are interesting as well, but I prefer the original versions. These were mentioned in The Gift's liner notes, but not included in any of the early The Gift singles. Stingy! Finally, there are some live versions that are all great and the live banter throughout is funny. The early version of The One Thing sounds nothing like the Shabooh Shoobah version, so that's like getting a new song. I'd strongly recommend this to anyone who likes INXS's early material, or to replace earlier CD versions of INXS and Underneath the Colours. This one sounds better and has a lot of songs that should have been included in those albums.

This collection along with "Shine Like It Does: The Anthology" are the only two INXS collections I have. Also "Listen Like Theives" I still have from way back, those are the only INXS music I have and am most interesting in their early work and into their early prime for the most part.To get their first 2 albums plus all the extra tracks is just wonderful I think, and I found a bunch of songs I like just as well as songs On the Anthology like "On A Bus", "Learn To Smile" (big fav), "In Vain", "Horizons", "Fair Weather Ahead", "Barbarian", "Scratch" (another big fav), "Telefone" (Demo 1979), "Silent Night" (Demo 1979), "Break Away" (Demo 1979). And it's great to hear Hutchence introduce "The One Thing" as a new song on the Live recording, even though it lacks the studio feel of course you can still tell it was gonna be a big hit. Some of their Ska influenced/bouncy stuff I heard on the anthology, and to me it's okay to a degree but I prefer numbers mentioned above that show a more structured maturing band. Of course at the same time I do enjoy songs like "Jumping", and "Just Keep Walking". I had forgotten I had purchased this one at amazon about 6 years ago not long after I got the Anthology, wasn't sure where I got it, but it said up top there that I purchased it in January of 2003 so I decided to finally review it after listening to it the last few days again. Sometimes it's difficult to put a INXS disc away...one of my all time fav bands for sure.

Early days,

Before "Kick". Before "Rock Star". These are the beginnings of Australia's greatest band since AC/DC.DeLuxe refers to an Australian label distributed by RCA. INXS came out of the pubs and signed to the fledgling label. They eventually caught on at home. The two studio releases would be released worldwide once they got international deals and a larger following a little later. This album combines their first album, "Underneath the Colours" (which I have on the original Aussie LP), "INXSive", and previously unreleased material. Half of this collection has never been released in the Americas, which entices diehard fans, for which is package is intended. The live tracks capture the band when they played clubs and bars and not stadiums and arenas. Many tracks here eventually fell off their setlist.

Buy this instead of Switch!,

If you're a true INXS fan, this is a must have! I have INXS' self titled debut as well as Underneath The Colours on vinyl, but they don't include a lot of these rarities which are included on this double disc. This is a supurb compilation that really illustrates how the band got its start and how the band evolved. I know that it's expensive, but it's worth every penny. If you're tight on cash, save your money by not buying Switch with JD Misfortunate and buy this instead! You won't regret it! |
