3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Resource
This book is a good tool for counselors and people recovering from addiction. It does a good job of illustrating the symptoms of relapse and provides a basic outline of a plan for recovery. This book is more about the symptoms of withdrawal and relapse than it is about recovery. The author strongly urges the recovering person to seek help from groups like AA and to not go...

This review is from: Staying Sober: A Guide for Relapse Prevention- Based Upon the CENAPS Model of Treatment (Paperback)
As someone who has worked with substance abusing
individuals (and, as a master's student,
having comoderated a DUI therapy group), STAYING
SOBER is an invaluable resource for therapists and
clients alike.

Basically, Gorski & Miller outline a way in which
the addicted individual can learn to avoid relapsing
in the future - basically, by examining the "triggers"
(usually emotional & situational) which can
potentially lead to relapse. By examining these

triggers, and then creating a "relapse prevention
plan", the addicted individual can
usually find a way to avoid relapse.

However, my summary does not do the book justice.
I _strongly_ urge everyone who can to pick up this
book. It is one of the best books I have read
about the subject of relapse prevention

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible on Relapse and Recovery from Substance Abuse., September 1, 1999
By

This review is from: Staying Sober: A Guide for Relapse Prevention- Based Upon the CENAPS Model of Treatment (Paperback)
Until this book, the technology to treat repeated relapse into alcoholism and drug addiction did not exist at worst, and was haphazard at best. What the authors did was study relapsers and notice patterns of relapse. These patterns could then be codified and used in a program to identify 'triggers' or situation that lent themselves to relapse, and could thus be avoided in the future. In addition, some tools can be developed to help recovering persons deal with unexpected triggers if and when they arose in the future.

It is a lot of work, both for the counselor and for the client, but the payoff is long term sobriety.

This book is just a MUST for anyone with a chronic relapse problem. It is simply written and very straightforward. These authors have also published a workbook and manual to help with relapse prevention. These materials help one to put the principles advanced in "Staying Sober" to work. I sometimes think that I may never have finally gotten a grip on sobriety had I not discovered this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Staying Sober: A Guide for Relapse Prevention- Based Upon the CENAPS Model of Treatment (Paperback)
This book is a great resource for understanding and working on relapse prevention. I personnally used it within my recovery as well as with clients I worked with in treatment. It includes a great overview of addiction as a disease, relapse prevention skills, post acute withdrawal syndrome, stages of recovery and much more useful and necessary information. Recommended for those in recovery from addiction and those working with the recovering population.

This is an excellent foundation to understanding the complex causes of relapse and their early indentification. It gives good information on indentification of relapse warning signs and constructive ways to abort another sprial into relapse. This book is written to supplament your 12 step program and is most useful when coupled with a relapse prevention support group that is not AA. If you can find or found a relapse group this book will be invaluable and rated 5 stars. Only relapse prone alcholic's need read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome recovery tool!F, September 23, 2009
This review is from: Staying Sober: A Guide for Relapse Prevention- Based Upon the CENAPS Model of Treatment (Paperback)
I have been clean and sober for almost 9 years, and have read this book several times. I like it because of the way that it is broken down. It makes a lot of sense to me. Early in recovery, this was something logical that I badly needed, and as my recovery continues, I find myself looking at it again and again. Recently, I have decided to get the workbook as well, and work that with my sponsor.

Great book for the newly abstinent. Describes the difference between not drinking and being sober. Provides a clear framework to identify signs of coming relapse and develop a plan to avoid it. I know this will be useful as I regain a fulfilling sober life.

This book offers easily understood explanations of addiction and the relapse process. The book was offered to me through an out-patient rehabilitation program and has been an invaluable tool on countless occasions since. The book offers examples that you can apply to your own experiences. By fully understanding the cycle of addiction can the addict most successfully break the cycle. I strongly recommend this book to anyone suffering from the disease of addiction, the sober family coping with a drug addicted member, or those offering education on the subject.
