How latin America and North America are linked!, August 4, 2007
This review is from: Steadfastness of the Saints: A Journal of Peace and War in Central and North America (Paperback)
This book begins with a riddle: "Who dies first, the gunman or the victim? Berrigan answers with a journal of epiphanies he experienced during a trip through El Salvador and Nicaragua. The book begins in the U.S. ("The land of Unknowing") where his friends from Plowshares are on trial for waging peace. He then moves to El Salvador and Nicaragua where he witnesses the aftermath of the violence of death squads and contra attacks. Throughout the journey he meets and listens to the steadfast saints who have persistently resisted violence and paid the price, and all the while he links the violence in Central America to the contorted ethics of violence in the U.S. His answer: the gunman dies first. The book is written in prose that itself radiates the dissonant, purgatorial, and a times absurd reality of violence in the Americas. -- from the back cover of the book
