Not their best... but a solid album nevertheless!,
This review is from: Steal Yer Heart (Audio CD)
This album is definitely not one of the best things The Briefs have ever done, but it's still got some catchy tunes. Notable tracks are "Stuck on You" (the second single off the album and it seems the band's first actual love song)and "Forty and Above" (an ode to older women sung by new bassist, Kicks). The Briefs haven't lost their sense of humor on this one and continue to play fun, goofy punk rock the way they did in the seventies. But if you're new to the band, I'd recommend picking up their first album, "Hit After Hit" instead.

Save yourself 14 bucks and go buy Hit after Hit or Sex Objects. This album blows.

this is the first good album since hit after hit. the previous two were forced and boring. i had lost hope in this band, but this album is great, and even contends with hit after hit. great!

Took a few listens...,

This is a great album, but it took me a few listens to really appreciate it. At first there weren't any songs that stood out or really hooked me which was strange for a Briefs record. I was worried that the line-up change had a negative effect, but after playing it four or five times it sunk in and now I love it. Maybe it's not their very best record, but it's still the Briefs and so it's head and shoulders above 95% of everything coming out now.
If you're new to this band, they have a very unique sound that is almost like a bizarre blend of Old School West Coast Hard Core Punk like The Adolescents or Angry Samoans mixed with upbeat New Wave stuff like Devo (minus the keyboards, of course)and then there's that influence of those Killed By Death compilations. I would recommend picking up the Singles Only collection album to anyone interested in this band, but especially to people new to The Briefs. Very few bands make me move anymore, but I cannot sit still when The Briefs are playing and their live show is incredible. Absolutely one of the best bands going right now. |
