Book Description

8 and up3 and up
With its driving narrative and compelling illustrations, Stealaway is an exciting read for fans of horse stories, ghost stories, and the moody mysteries of the bleak Scottish highlands.

Nicky moves to Scotland, where her mother, a horse trainer, will work for Mr. Robson, a wealthy American who has just purchased his family's ancestral estate, Bloodybow Castle. True to its name, the castle has a terrible past. Hundreds of years ago, border raiders stole a priceless stallion, starting a feud that led to the death of a young boy. Nicky and her new friend Jed, the son of the American owner, find that strange events are taking place. And Stealaway, Mr. Robson's new stallion, is threatened in a ghostly attack. Can Nicky and Jed put the ghosts of the past to rest to ensure a safe future for Bloodybow Castle and its stable?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–When Nicky's mother takes a new job as a horse trainer for a wealthy American who lives in a haunted Scottish castle, the girl and her mom step into a world of mystery. Bloodybow Castle has a dark past, fueled by a feud over a priceless stallion that led to the death of a 10-year-old boy. At night, Nicky hears mysterious noises in the stable yard and later learns that the white pony, Rowan, is a ghost. She and the estate owner's son, Jed, realize that the unsettled spirits of the past present danger for the horses that currently live at Bloodybow. They work together to unravel the mysteries and try to help Rowan save the animals. While kids may stumble over some of the British terminology, the story is fast moving and should hold their interest. Small, atmospheric black-and-white drawings capture the flavor of the text. A good choice for horse lovers and mystery aficionados alike.–Kelley Rae Unger, Peabody Institute, MA
